The Albis is a mountain range in the canton of Zurich that runs from Sihlbrugg in the south to Urdorf / Schlieren near Zurich in the north for about 22 kilometers parallel to Sihl and Lake Zurich .

geography

The Albis lies between the Sihltal in the east and the Reppischtal and the Aeugstertal with the Türlersee in the west. The mountain ridge is followed by the district boundary between the Affoltern district in the west and the Horgen district and the city of Zurich on the east and northeast side.

The Sihlzopf above Sihlbrugg forms the southernmost prominent elevation and Zurich's local mountain Uetliberg forms the northern end of the mountain ridge.

The highest point of the mountain range is the Bürglen in the southern section at 914.6  m above sea level. M .; the most famous point is the Uetliberg with a height of 870.6  m above sea level. M. The east face of Albis is largely from Sihl covered, often steep and of ridges and deep erosion trenches such as the case straightedge in the catchment area of the Rütschlibachs. The west side is less steep and partly meadowland. Numerous short streams, steep in the upper area, drain the mountain area to the Sihl and the Reppisch.

The Sihltal separates the Zimmerberg from the Albis.

geology

Geologically, the Albis belongs to the Upper Freshwater Molasse and consists primarily of marl , marl-sandstones and Molasse-Nagelfluh. At the highest points, especially at the Uetliberg, a ceiling gravel cap löcheriger place Nagelfluh (so named by Arnold Escher von der Linth ) that during the ice ages by the proposal by Linth and Reuss glacier was deposited.

Traffic routes

Several footpaths, historical mule tracks ( Schnabel gaps ) and road passes lead over the Albis. The Albispass , the Buechenegg and the Waldegg can be used all year round. The Felsenegg is accessible with the Adliswil – Felsenegg cable car from Adliswil , the Uetliberg with the Uetlibergbahn from Zurich. There is a radar station on the Albis, which records the intensity of precipitation in central and northern Switzerland.

The Uetliberg tunnel of the A3 motorway is located under the Albis .

Wilderness park, local recreation area, ground monuments

The Albiskette and the Reppischtal were included in the federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments of national importance (property number 1306) in 1983. Large parts of the area are forests with natural history importance (WNB), and the Albis is designated as a landscape protection area.

Today the Albis is primarily a recreational area for the surrounding agglomeration communities. Agricultural and forestry use is declining.

On January 1st, 2009 the Wilderness Park Zurich - Sihlwald was opened as the first national nature adventure park and largest mixed deciduous forest in the Swiss plateau.

At several points of the mountain range there are prehistoric earthworks and medieval castle ruins. The oppidum Uetliberg is an important Celtic complex . The Schnabelburg, the ruins of the Baldern Castle, the Manegg ruins, the Sellenbüren Castle on the Ofengüpf and the Friesenberg Castle , from which the city quarter directly below the mountain takes its name, date from the Middle Ages .

On the cantonal road that leads from Zurich over the Waldegg into the Reppischtal, there is the Waldegg lock , which was built in the Second World War, and the Uetliberg fortress on the mountain .
