Langnau am Albis is a municipality in the district of Horgen in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . It is located on the Sihl , about 10 kilometers from the city of Zurich . The Albispass also belongs to the municipality .

geography

Langnau is a large municipality in terms of area, many areas consist of forests and meadows. In the west the Albis ridge forms the natural border, in the east the Sihl. The area is mostly steep.

history

According to previous research, Langnau am Albis was first mentioned as a village in 1397. At that time it belonged to the Maschwanderamt , which Zurich acquired in 1406 and transferred to the newly created Landvogtei Knonau in 1512 . At that time Langnau had around 150 inhabitants. A community toboggan from 1677 says that at that time the Wacht Langnau (as part of the parish Thalwil) had 64 households with 613 inhabitants. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church separated from Thalwil, when the "honorable gmein Langnau graciously agreed to build a new church and parsonage upon her submissive, woeful persistence".

Langnau was able to inaugurate its own church in 1711. In 1877 the first Catholic church was built, which was replaced by a modern new building in 1969. The "castle", a characteristic residential tower, dates from the Middle Ages (13th century). The ruins of the Schnabelburg on the Albiskamm, destroyed in 1309, are reminiscent of the same era .

Typical witnesses of the 18th century are the renovated former wine-growing house "Hotze-Hus" and the house "Zur Trülle". Furthermore, the so-called «Russenbrunnen» (also called «Franzosenbrunnen») located on Albisstrasse is a reminder of the chaos of war in Helveticia in 1798/1799.

economy

With a good 7,000 inhabitants, Langnau am Albis is a larger village. Since the community itself hardly has any industrial areas, most people work downstream in Adliswil or in the nearby urban area of Zurich .

Langnau is accessed by the SZU ( Sihltalbahn ), which serves two stations in the municipality. The station Langnau-Gattikon has three tracks and is often the last stop, which from Zurich trains connecting reflecting the relatively remote stations Sihlwald and Sihlbrugg - the actual route endpoint - rarely use. In view of the abandonment of the old Zurich Selnau station and the sidings there in 1990, a new storage facility for the trains of the Sihl Valley Railway was built at Langnau-Gattikon station . The Wildpark-Höfli station consists of a platform on the track and serves, among other things, to develop the Langenberg Wildlife Park , which is to the west of the train station.

Langnau is also served by public buses or the Postbus.

nature

In Langnau there is the Langenberg Wildlife Park with 15, mostly native species. Attractions include bears and wolves, as well as a facility for beavers and otters. The park belongs to the city of Zurich and entry is free.

Extensive forest areas belong to the municipality of Langnau, some of which belong to the Sihlwald .

Attractions

There are two churches in Langnau:

  • The reformed church was built in the years 1709–1711 on a hill in the Oberdorf district . It is a baroque hall church.
  • The Roman Catholic Church of St. Marien was inaugurated in 1969 and is located on Berhaldenweg above the train station. The Catholic parish of Langnau goes back to the mission station Langnau-Gattikon , the third oldest diaspora community in the canton of Zurich. Today's concrete church of St. Marien replaced the St. Mary's Church built in 1877.
  • The Hochwacht tower stands on the Albis with a height of 30 meters and can be climbed as a lookout tower.
