Schönenberg is a village and part of the political municipality of Wädenswil in the canton of Zurich . Schönenberg ZH formed an independent political municipality until the end of 2018 , which was incorporated into the city of Wädenswil like huts when the municipalities merged on January 1, 2019 .

geography

Schönenberg lies on the southern tip of the Zimmerberg range , a lateral moraine that the Linth Glacier left behind when it advanced after the last Ice Age. The terrain rises from the lake to a terraced, wide ridge, characterized by drumlins, and slopes steeply towards the Sihl. Forests lie along the Sihl and around the Teufenbachweiher in the south of Schönenberg. A linden tree is traditionally planted on the peaks of the drumlins . Due to its altitude, Schönenberg is mostly above the fog line of the Central Plateau. Together with the green landscape and the moors of national importance, this makes Schönenberg a hiking area.

history

Schönenberg, from the south-southwest, August 25, 1947

The first evidence of the settlement of the former municipal area comes from a document that is dated to 1270. Mention is made of six farms belonging to the Cistercian monastery Wettingen in today's area of Schönenberg, which at that time belonged to the domain of the barons of Wädenswil. In 1287 the last baron Rudolf III sold. in the absence of descendants, the lordship of Wädenswil (today's communities Wädenswil , Richterswil , and Uetikon am See and part of Hirzel ) to the knight house Bubikon . After the Reformation, the Johanniter sold the rule of Wädenswil (including today's Schönenberg area) with all rights to Zurich in 1549 . In 1701 the government built a reformed church , a rectory and a fortified churchyard on Geissferen (the name of the current village center at that time) . From 1703, the own parish of Schönenberg developed.

Schönenberg made himself financially independent by buying out the Wädenswil poor and Batzengut (1784) and from the Wädenswiler municipal property (1811/1813). In 1823/1824 a school building was built next to the church, and the secondary school followed in 1836. Schönenberg was opened up with a stagecoach connection to Wädenswil (1871) and later by postbus (1922). The community center was inaugurated in 1948 and the infrastructure of the community at that time has been expanded: in 1950 a school building with a gym was built on the "Humbel", a sewage treatment plant was built in 1953/1954 in the "Matte", an old people's home opened in the "Stollenweid" in 1958 and in 1977 another wastewater treatment plant (in the lower "Mittelberg") was put into operation. In recent history, the former parish hall was rebuilt (1996/1997), the “Stollenweid” retirement home was expanded (1997–99) and a school pavilion was set up (2001).

On May 21, 2017, as in Hütten , a referendum resolved to merge the municipalities with the city of Wädenswil on January 1, 2018. Due to further objections against the agreed merger, it was implemented one year later.

The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) kept Schönenberg (ZH) under the FSO number 0140 until it was incorporated into the city of Wädenswil .
