Sihlbrugg is a hamlet and traffic junction on the border between the Canton of Zug and the Canton of Zurich in Switzerland . To better distinguish it from the hamlet of Sihlbrugg Station , a little further down the Sihl - a district of the Zurich municipality of Horgen - the name Sihlbrugg Dorf is also used .

geography

Four municipalities are involved in the village ; the two Zug communities Baar and Neuheim , as well as the Zurich communities Hausen am Albis and Horgen (until the merger at the end of 2017 Hirzel ). Sihlbrugg is mainly located on the Baarerboden, south of the Sihlzopf and at the foot of the Hirzelpass to the east .

The Babenwaag was the main bridge in Sihlbrugg until 1960. Today it is 3 km upstream. Its predecessor was destroyed in the Sonderbund War in 1847 .

For around 600 years, the main traffic on the Gotthard route from Zug to Zurich ran at the earliest place known as "Babenwaag" (today Sihlbrugg) . The mule track then ran on two route variants over the Hirzel Höhi past the village center of Hirzel to Sust in Horgen directly on Lake Zurich , where the goods were loaded onto the ship to Zurich.

On the Baarerboden, the narrow Sihl valley opens up briefly before it squeezes north on the Sihlzopf between Zimmerberg and Albis towards Zurich. Topographically remarkable is the extensive, flat and formerly marshy crest of the Baarerboden, with a height difference of only 5 m, forming the watershed between Sihltal and Lorzetal. This prevents the Sihl from flowing west into the Lorze here .

Traffic routes

Five main roads meet in Sihlbrugg today, including the main road through the lower Sihltal, from Zurich and Langnau am Albis , as well as the main road through Baarerboden, which leads to Baar and Zug or at Walterswil on the A4a motorway . The two roads mentioned formed the flattest and fastest road connection between Zurich and Zug until November 2009 (at that time the section of the A4 was opened in the Knonauer Amt between the branches Zurich West and Blegi near Cham). Sihlbrugg is also the starting point of the Hirzelpassstrasse to Wädenswil with connection to the A3 Zurich – Chur motorway .

In the past, the wood drift on the rapidly flowing Sihl from the Zuerich and Schwyzer forests to Zurich was of economic importance, which, in addition to topographical difficulties (such as the Risleter Felsen in Langnau), delayed the construction of a drivable road between Zug and Zurich through the Sihl valley for a long time.

Infrastructure

The majority of the commercial and industrial area on Baarerboden belongs to the municipality of Baar. In addition, there are petrol stations, hotels, a motel and catering facilities in Sihlbrugg, in contrast to residential buildings, which are an exception.

history

Berchtold von Schnabelburg was in the 13th century under Emperor Friedrich II Vogt on the Albis. The Rattlisberg, the western slope between the Schnabelburg with the footpath leading directly past it over the Schnabellücke (later replaced by the path over the Albispass) and the Sihlfurt Babenwag belonged to this bailiwick . In 1267 the old mule track as part of the Gotthard route ran as a ford here through the Sihl, where there was also a tavern. In 1326 after the Habsburg conquest of Schnabelburg and the expulsion of its barons in connection with the campaign after the regicide of the Wind, the Habsburg customs issuing "on the bruggen ze Zug" is mentioned. It is very likely that the Sihlbrugg will be mentioned for the first time. In 1385 at the latest a bridge (sil brugge) was mentioned here unequivocally. There the middlemen each conjured the mule order. The place of the Sihl crossing has been called Sihlbrugg since the 18th century. Because of the increase in horse and foot traffic in the 14th century, horse stables were set up and the house was converted into a customs post in 1528. The Krone tavern has been owned by the Huber-Urner family since 1773 - the "new" Krone was built in 1796.
