Coat of arms and place name

Blazon : in silver a leaping black stag .

The place name first attested to in 1296 (cum bonis in Hirsol) is a combination of the Old High German hir (u) z "deer" and sol "wallow, pool, swamp hole, swampy spot" and thus means "swamp hole where game roams around" . Originally it was a field name that only became a place name secondarily.

The population during the last centuries can be described as rural-peasant. Since 1950, more and more new buildings have been built. Due to the proximity to Zurich and the preferred location of Hirzel in a local recreation area, newcomers from the neighboring communities on the lake settled. In the first few years this often led to different political interests. Today the newcomers are well integrated into the authorities and also into community life. For the elderly, there is the Spyrigarten senior citizens ' center in the center of the village in the immediate vicinity of the Reformed Church , consisting of a nursing home group and apartments for the elderly from the Spyrigarten cooperative.

economy

There are still around forty farms in Hirzel.

A bakery and the village shop “Volg” ensure the supply of everyday necessities; the butcher, the dairy and the "Landi" have been closed in recent years. There are also a few restaurants, two car garages and a club in the village.

The majority of the working population commutes to the greater Zurich area every day.
