Salomon Tobler (born December 10, 1794 in Zurich ; † November 19, 1878 there ) was a Swiss pastor and poet .

Life

Salomon Tobler was born in Zurich in 1794 as the son of the teacher and pastor Johann Kaspar Tobler and his wife Ursula Hirzel. From 1810 he attended the humanistic grammar school, and in 1816 he passed the theological exam. From 1816 he worked as a parish vicar in Mönchaltorf , Wülflingen and Wädenswil . In 1819 he became pastor of Sternenberg , and in 1820 he married. In 1826 he took over the pastoral position in Hirzel .

In 1820 he married the née Margaretha Diezinger, daughter of Johannes Diezinger. In 1836 he published the epic Die Enkel Winkelried 's . This work deals with the resistance of the Nidwalden against the French troops in 1798 ( days of horror in Nidwalden ).

In 1839 the situation for Salomon Tobler in Hirzel became intolerable. As a liberal, he criticized the events of the Züriputsch to his largely conservative community and therefore had to change jobs in 1840. Until the end of his professional career he was in charge of the parish of Embrach .

Inspired by the success of his first work, he began planning another epic. First he dealt with Huldrych Zwingli , but when his friend Abraham Emanuel Fröhlich published an epic about Zwingli in 1840, he broke off this work and began to study Gustav Adolf . Ultimately, he chose Christopher Columbus and published the epic Columbus in 1846 . Although this work was praised in the professional world, it was less successful than Die Enkel Winkelried's . Further plans for an epic about Niklaus von Flüe remained unrealized.

Tobler's wife died in 1853. In 1864 he resigned from his pastoral office and moved to Zurich, where he lived with one of his sons until his death.

Salomon Tobler was the father of the Germanist Ludwig Tobler (1827–1895), the Romanist Adolf Tobler (1835–1910) and the historian Wilhelm Tobler.
