The head of the Bremen fire brigade is Karl-Heinz Knorr.
tasks
The range of tasks of the professional fire brigade includes:
- Defensive fire protection
- Liberation of humans and animals from life-threatening predicaments
- Technical assistance in the event of public emergencies, accidents and environmental damage
- technical assistance in other cases, provided there are no more urgent tasks
- Emergency rescue and medical service
history
The Bremen fire brigade began in 1605, when fire protection was assigned to the citizens' companies by the Bremen Council . Each squad of these units of the civil military was assigned a fire chief and fire fighting equipment. The extinguishing water was drawn from the Weser , from wells or via the Bremer Wasserkunst . After Bremen burned down a total of eleven times between the years 913 and 1754, a Bremen fire order was introduced in 1716 , which gave the city fathers the management of the fire fighting teams. These fire regulations were revised in 1751 and 1818.
When the citizen companies were dissolved after the end of the French occupation in 1810, the city founded a fire extinguishing station . The supervision of this organization had four fire chiefs from the council and nine deputies from the citizenry , as well as two masons and carpenters from the old, the new and the suburbs. The fire extinguishing station maintained ten syringes in the old town, five in the new town and six in the suburb, which were serviced and served by voluntary citizen fire brigades from the respective districts.
On May 11, 1870, the professional fire brigade was founded, which comprised 85 men with three large hand syringes, five water trucks and one team car. The Hauptwache was initially set up in Königstrasse (today Dechanatstrasse ), but in the same year it was moved to Strasse Am Wandrahm , where it is still located today. The old fire extinguishing station was closed and a fire director was appointed to head the fire department. As a result, several fire stations were set up across the city. In 1890 the equipment of the fire brigade was improved and a system of hydrants and fire alarms was set up. In the same year the fire brigade also took over the ambulance transport.
In 1907 the Bremen fire brigade received the first motorized fire engine. During the Second World War , a fire protection police was founded and fire protection was partly taken over by air raid and plant protection units. After 1945 the professional fire brigade was rebuilt and subordinated to the Senator for the Interior.
staff
When it was founded in 1870, the Bremen professional fire brigade consisted of 97 men. City area expansions, population growth and economic growth and the associated increase in deployments led to a steadily increasing need for personnel. For the centenary in 1970, 534 fire brigade members ensured the city's safety.
The last few years have been marked by the city of Bremen's budget resources becoming scarcer. This also influenced the number of staff in the professional fire brigade. The current (2012) actual workforce is 509 civil servants and salaried employees (483 fire service officers, 3 administrative officers, 23 employees) and is thus below the target number of 530 (502 fire service officers, 4 administrative officers, 24 employees).

Bet numbers
In the areas of fire fighting , technical assistance and emergency rescue , the number of operations is steadily increasing. The area of ambulance has been served mainly by private providers for some years, so that the numbers here have fallen sharply compared to the last century.

Youth fire brigades
The Bremen fire brigade currently has 13 youth fire brigades with a total of around 250 young members between 10 and 18 years of age. These are organizationally affiliated with the respective volunteer fire brigade through which they were founded and represent one of the most important ways of recruiting young people for them.
According to the new structural concept, it is mandatory for volunteer fire brigades above a certain level of equipment to set up a youth fire brigade in order to prevent problems with young people. In contrast to some other federal states, in Bremen there is no provision for members of the youth fire brigade to be involved in volunteer fire brigade operations.
In addition to training in fire-fighting technology, the youth fire brigades also do a large part of general youth work . This ranges from annual tent camps to sporting competitions and application training.
All youth fire brigades in the state of Bremen are united in the Bremen Youth Fire Brigade. This was founded in 1986 as a youth organization of the Bremen State Fire Brigade Association. The main tasks of the Bremen youth fire brigade are, on the one hand, to represent the Bremen youth fire brigades at the federal level, as well as to represent the interests of the youth fire brigade members vis-à-vis the volunteer fire brigades and the Bremen fire brigade, and to organize the state camp at Werdersee, which takes place every four years, with around 700 participants from all over Germany.
Highlights of the youth work of the Bremen Youth Fire Brigade in recent years have been the award of the German Youth Fire Brigade with the German National Prize 2013 and the win of the “Helping Hand” award from the Federal Ministry of the Interior in 2014.
With the amendment of the Bremen Assistance Act, it has been possible for the first time since 2017 to set up children's fire brigades in the state of Bremen. The first group of this kind was founded in Mahndorf in autumn 2017.
