The large-capacity emergency ambulances in Bavaria - ambulance bus , United ambulance or Rettungsbus called ( GRTW or GRTW ) - is a vehicle of the rescue service or civil protection on a bus -Fahrgestell.

Mostly, these are made to specifications, in part, to conversions of lines - or coaches . However, there are many different variations in the type of expansion. Wheelchair spaces, seats, stretcher spaces and hospital bed spaces are used. Depending on the equipment, the task area of the large-capacity ambulance also results. There are also large-capacity ambulances with variable equipment, i.e. i.e., it can be modified depending on the task. Due to the special field of activity and the high acquisition costs, large-capacity ambulances are usually only stationed in large cities and are used nationwide if necessary.

According to the EU proposal for painting special vehicles, the large-capacity ambulance should be  painted sulfur yellow ( RAL 1016) as a vehicle for the rescue service .

Areas of application

Accommodation of people

Due to the large number of seats, an ambulance can be used as accommodation, e.g. B. for evictions, are used. The advantages compared to a tent are that more people can be accommodated, cared for and registered in one accommodation at the same time, there is no setup and dismantling time and the bus can be moved and heated more easily.

Mass casualty

In the event of a mass casualty (MANV), a large-capacity ambulance is often used, as it offers space for many injured. In contrast to tents, the large-capacity ambulance is independent of the weather, mobile and easily heated. It is also suitable for transporting a large number of injured patients.

Intensive care transport

The large-capacity ambulance is suitable for intensive care transport, especially if it has one or more hospital beds or an attachment for such a bed is available. As the intensive care bed takes up a lot of space, it also offers more space for the care staff.

Transport of heavy patients

A normal ambulance is limited in terms of space, and for safety reasons the cot can only be loaded up to a certain mass (usually 150 kg). An ambulance can also be used here for particularly heavy patients. Usually a special stretcher is then used, which also runs on rollers but does not have a substructure like a stretcher. This also gives her a lower center of gravity. It is usually designed for patients up to 400 kg. Transport can be further simplified by a lowerable hallway and a ramp or a lifting platform.

Line bus traffic

At the Verkehrsbetriebe Westfalen Süd and the Verkehrsgesellschaft Belzig , among others , a large-capacity ambulance is used outside of regular scheduled services.

crew

The large-capacity ambulance usually only has a crew of two, sometimes just one, as the emergency services required usually get on at the destination.

technology

Since the large-capacity ambulance may make use of special rights and rights of way (§ 35 and 38 StVO ), it is equipped with a special signaling system consisting of a rotating beacon and acoustic horn (fire brigade or rescue vehicle). For better patient reception, a large-capacity ambulance usually has a height-adjustable hallway or a lifting platform , which is dispensable when using the low-floor technology of the carrier vehicle. For a slight conversion (stretcher holder and seats for the slightly injured or uninjured) there can be rails on the floor like in an airplane, in which the corresponding module can be installed. Since there is no specific DIN standard for equipping a large-capacity ambulance, the equipment can be selected according to the needs of the operator. In terms of loading, they correspond to at least an ambulance in accordance with DIN EN 1789 Type C. Sometimes an oxygen unit is permanently installed. Corresponding connections are then located at the places for seats or stretchers.
