history

Construction and commissioning

Originally, each a new boat for the Bremen police and the fire department Bremen are procured, technically outdated around and in the years bekommenen Service Boats Bremen 12 of the Water Police and Bremen to replace the fire department Bremen. However, the tight budget situation in Bremen, a country in distress , made financing two new ships seem unrealistic. By the Senator of the Interior then the decision was made to procure only one boat in combined use.

The main problem with the tender was that no comparable ship had been built in Europe for over thirty years. The contract for the construction of Bremen 1 was finally awarded to the Damen Shipyards Group and the contract for the construction was signed in March 2010. The keel of the 4.5 million euro new building was laid on January 26, 2011 at the shipyard of the shipyard group in Hardinxveld-Giessendam in the Netherlands and the ship was handed over to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in December of the same year.

The official handover to the water police and the Bremen fire brigade was carried out on May 15, 2012 by Senator Ulrich Mäurer . Mäurer described the Bremen 1 as a project with "model character for future replacement purchases in the ports of Europe".

The boat was through after going into service in regular operation Water Police of the Bremen Police manned. The crew was only reinforced by emergency services from the Bremen fire brigade when necessary . Since January 1, 2018, the boat has been manned exclusively by the Bremen fire brigade, technical support was initially provided by the waterway police. On January 1, 2019, the boat was completely under the responsibility of the Bremen fire brigade. The boat has not been used for police purposes since January 1st, 2018.

Criticism of the concept

The new concept came under fire after the sinking of the Hanseatic cog Roland von Bremen on January 28, 2014. Above all, it was criticized that the police had informed the fire brigade far too late about the impending doom. In addition, the police crew has not been trained in handling the fire-fighting equipment and was therefore unable to operate the bilge pumps. The criticism was later rejected by both the Bremen police and the Bremen fire brigade. When the ship was inaugurated, it was already said that the fire brigade would only lose a bit of independence at first glance. However, the Bremen 1 is a gain in effectiveness and safety in all application scenarios.

operation area

The Bremen 1 is stationed at the authorities jetty in Lankenau harbor. The ports of Bremen can be reached relatively quickly from here.

In the police service, the boat was used in the area of the Bremen Central and Lower Weser . The tasks included the monitoring of shipping traffic, nature and environmental protection, or controls in the area of safety in recreational shipping. After handing over to the responsibility of the fire brigade, the police received no replacement.

If necessary, the Bremen fire brigade will manned the ship and take it to the respective site. These include, in particular, larger locations in the city of Bremen near the Weser, which require a large amount of water or foam.

Ship technology

The 23.9 m long, 6 m wide and 65 t heavy ship is powered by a total of three marine diesel engines from the Caterpillar company . Two 425  kW motors (type: Cat 12) are used as side machines and a 652 kW motor (type: Cat 18) as the middle machine. The motors drive three jet drives . The Bremen 1 can reach a top speed of 40 km / h (around 21.6  kn ). The ship is equipped with a bow thruster .

Additional equipment includes a lifeboat and a crane with a load capacity of 1,200 kg each at the bow and stern .

Extinguishing technology

In order to do justice to the purpose as a fireboat, the ship is equipped with extensive extinguishing technology for fire fighting . This includes, among other things, two fire pumps , tanks and proportioners for the production of fire- fighting foam and fire-fighting monitors . Two of the monitors are mounted on the two cranes to enable remote-controlled extinguishing in ship hatches . Additional special equipment includes measuring devices for gas detection and other fire-fighting equipment for smoke extraction or pumping . The equipment is mainly loaded in mobile and cranable containers so that it can also be used from land.

Fire pumps:

  • 1 × 14,000 l / min extinguishing water at 10 bar delivery pressure (driven by the medium machine)
  • 1 × 1,000 l / min extinguishing water at 10 bar delivery pressure (driven by its own electric motor)

Extinguishing foam system:

  • 1 × proportioner for the pressure addition of 1% or 3% foam compound over the entire amount of extinguishing water
  • 2 × foam tanks, each with a foam compound capacity of 2,500 l

Fire monitors:

  • 3 × 3,000 l / min water or extinguishing foam
