Werner Ganz (born on March 16, 1902 in Zurich ; died on September 16, 1995 in Winterthur ) was a Swiss historian , middle school teacher , university professor , author , publicist and politician . He was the author of the city history of Winterthur, published in 1960 and 1979 in two parts.

biography

Werner Ganz was born in 1902 as the son of pastor and dean Julius Ganz. From 1914 to 1920 he attended high school in Zurich. He then studied history , art history , German literary history and historical auxiliary sciences in Zurich and Paris . Like his father and two of his brothers, Werner Ganz also joined the Swiss Zofinger Association during his student days , to which he remained connected throughout his life. In 1925 he completed his studies with a dissertation on economic history from the Grossmünsterstift , with which he was awarded a doctorate in philosophy .

After graduating from the university, Ganz was called to the Kantonsschule Winterthur as an assistant teacher for history, German and Latin, which at that time was still in the building of today's Oskar Reinhart Museum . After three years he was employed there as the main teacher and stayed with the school until 1969. From 1940 to 1972, Ganz worked as a private lecturer , from 1949 he was titular professor for Swiss history and Swiss constitutional history at the University of Zurich .

As a local historian , Ganz headed the Historisch-Antiquaristenverein Winterthur from 1938 to 1957, and as its president he is the founding father of the Lindengut Local History Museum, which opened in 1956 . In 1960 the first volume of his standard work on the history of the city of Winterthur was published, which covers the development of Winterthur up to 1798. The second volume, which continues the history of the town up to the town union, was published in 1979.

Ganz was also politically active and joined the FDP Winterthur shortly after his election as main teacher , for which he sat from 1942 to 1956 in the large municipal council and which he chaired from 1952 to 1956. From 1934 to 1943 he was also a member of the Winterthur Old Town Church Administration. At cantonal level he was a member of the archives commission from 1935 to 1971, of the monument preservation commission from 1947 to 1972 and of the church synod from 1938 to 1951.

Following the example of his academic teacher, the historian and professor Karl Meyer , who was part of the Spiritual National Defense movement , Ganz vehemently campaigned against so-called "conformist tendencies" towards National Socialist Germany in the 1930s and 1940s . During the Second World War he also did active service in the Swiss Army , where he held the position and degree of Fourier .
