The Winterthur libraries are the library system of the public libraries of the city of Winterthur . This includes the city library with the Winterthur collection (including the former special collections) and six district libraries.

history

The first library in Winterthur, then called the “Citizens' Library”, was founded on November 1, 1660 by four exponents of the music college . The first place to stay was in 1661, the Hinwilerhaus (today the Rathaus-Apotheke), but one year later they moved to the town hall , where the library remained until the beginning of the 19th century. At that time the library was still an institution for the political and economic elite, only with the Enlightenment did the citizen library develop into a lending library for the entire population. In the initial phase, in addition to books, the library also collected many curiosities such as shells and other things - these holdings can now be found in the Nature Museum and in the Coin Cabinet .

Until the end of the 15th century, libraries were reserved for churches, pastors and religious orders. In töss monastery is a more significant library was located. There was a new development through humanism and the Reformation . In 1593, Rodolfus Hospinianus, archdeacon and pastor at the Fraumünster in Zurich , suggested for the first time to build a public library in Winterthur. Winterthur had developed into a center before the library was founded, and the gentlemen in Zurich extended the freedom of trade. The Musikkollegium Winterthur was founded in 1629 . From this environment, a citizen library based on the model of Zurich and Schaffhausen was suggested. On May 6th, 1660, the founding fathers discussed the procedure during a walk on the Heiligberg , the establishment was decided on November 11th, 1660 in the rectory. Within a few weeks there were already 586 books together. On December 2, 1662, the move from the Hinwilerhaus to the old town hall took place. The library stayed there for 180 years.

From 1727 a library catalog was also available. From 1777 onwards, a "directory of selected books" was published in printed form, which was not yet common at the time. From 1782 to 1784 the library was temporarily moved to the Waaghaus because the old town hall was partly demolished and replaced by the current building or it was completely renovated. In 1835 Johann Conrad Troll published the history of the public library for the first time. In 1842 the library moved to the newly built boys' schoolhouse, which was later called the grammar school and is now known as the Oskar Reinhart Museum . From 1872 the citizen's library was renamed the city library. At the beginning of the 20th century, the institution positioned itself in the library landscape of that time as a general educational library. The library was owned by the community until 1914. On January 2, 1916, a new museum and library building was opened on Museumsstrasse, into which the city library moved. In 1931 the entire collection was re-cataloged. On July 5, 2003, the new city library was opened on the church square . It was the first fully electronically controlled library in Europe.

New year sheet

The Winterthur libraries have been publishing so-called annual New Year's sheets for a long time . Each year, these publications in book form are dedicated to a different topic from Winterthur's urban and regional history and are an important source when it comes to Winterthur's urban history. The 357th New Year's Gazette was published in 2020. The first New Year's sheet can be traced back to 1665 when an engraving with a text on it was published.
