Johann Conrad Troll

Johann Conrad Troll (born May 23, 1783 in Gottlieben ; † March 7, 1858 in Winterthur ) was a Swiss educator and historian .

Life

Johann Conrad Troll spent his early childhood in his birthplace Gottlieben. At the age of seven, after his father broke up the family, he moved to live with his grandparents in Winterthur. From 1802 to 1805 he studied theology at the Collegium Carolinum in Zurich . In 1806 he started teaching as a teacher in Winterthur. In 1819 he was significantly involved in the reform of the Winterthur school system and from 1820 he was rector of the city schools; he held the office until 1856. From 1830 to 1832 he was a member of the cantonal education council, where he was also involved in reforming the cantonal school system. Troll ended his teaching career in 1856 on his 50th anniversary. On the occasion of this, a municipal scholarship fund was founded under his leadership. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich .

Troll left the city of Winterthur with the eight-volume work History of the City of Winterthur, edited from documents on the history of the city, which he recorded from 1840 to 1850 and is an important source of the city's history today.

Troll died in 1858 at the age of 74.
