Ferentillo is an Italian commune with 1839 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Terni in the Umbria region .
geography
The community extends over around 69 km² . It is located about 60 km southeast of Perugia and about 12 km northeast of Terni . The main town is divided by the river Nera into the districts of Matterella and Precetto, each dominated by a rocca (fortification).
The other districts include Ampognano, Castellonalto, Castellone Basso, Colle Olivo, Colli, Gabbio, Leazzano, Le Mura, Lorino, Macchialunga, Macelletto, Macenano, Terria, Monterivoso, Nicciano, Sambucheto and San Mamiliano.
The neighboring municipalities are Arrone , Leonessa ( RI ), Montefranco , Monteleone di Spoleto ( PG ), Polino , Scheggino (PG) and Spoleto (PG).
history
The place arose when Liutprand 740 left Ferentium and founded the place as Ferentillo. The place name comes from the Latin Ferentum illi (the one from Ferentium), the place itself was closely connected with the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle in today's district of Macenano. 1300 gave birth to Pope Boniface VIII. Post-conflict Abbey of governance in place and delivered them into the hands of the Capitolo Lateran , bringing them directly to the Papal State was under. In 1415 Ferentillo became a fiefdom of the Trinci family from Foligno. The place became independent in 1484 when Pope Innocent VIII put the government of the municipality in the hands of his son Franceschetto Cybo . He married Maddalena de 'Medici . In 1563 Alberico Cybo Malaspina signed the Statute Status Ferentilli Serenissimi Ducis Massae Cybo , which confirmed the independence of Spoleto and the Papal States . This lasted until 1730, when Alderano Cybo sold the place to Nicolò Benedetti di Spoleto. Then Rodolfo Gabrielli di Montevecchio followed as ruler, before the place was under the apostolic chamber until 1847 and by Pius IX. was awarded to the Prince of Umbria and Precetto. Ferentillo became an independent municipality in 1860 as part of the unification of Italy .
Attractions
- The Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle from the 8th century is an art-historically significant abbey that is located in the district of Macenano. It was built as an extension of the church of the hermits Giovanni and Lazzaro, which was built in 535 . The monastery was founded by Faroaldo II and served as a burial place for the dukes of the Lombards . At the end of the 9th century, the abbey was destroyed by the Saracens , under Emperor Otto III. restored and replaced by a new building from 1016. The floor plan , transept , Tiburio , the three apses and parts of the mosaic floor in the choir are from the original church. The sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul from the 11th and 12th centuries can be seen at the portal . The 13th century campanile is adorned with marble fragments from the 8th century.
