history

Although probably of older origin, the place is first documented in 1012 in the Regesto Farfense by Giovanni di Pietro. The name comes from the Count of Spoleto , Ugone († around 1036-1048), from which first Castrum Hugoni , then Castrugone , Strungone and finally Stroncone became. Further documents from the same century attest the place already owned a castle (Castello), a city wall and a political proximity to Narni at this time. Pope Innocent III granted the place communal autonomy in 1215, which led to close ties to the Guelfs . At the end of the 14th century, the community came together with Narni in the direct area of influence of the Papal States . Stroncone continued to develop economically with the establishment of the Monte di Pietà (1466) and the Monte Frumentario (wheat consortium, 1489). Except for the occupation by Napoleon's troops , the place remained with the Papal States until 1860, when Umbria became part of Italy in the course of the Risorgimento . In 1929 the place was divided into the newly founded province of Terni.
