Lugnano in Teverina is an Italian commune with 1433 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Terni in the Umbria region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

geography

The community extends over around 30  km² . It is located about 60 km south of the regional capital Perugia and about 25 km west of the provincial capital Terni in the Teverina Valley . It lies in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone E, 2 127 GR / G.

The place also includes Collesecco (350 m, approx. 50 inhabitants), Fontana (340 m, approx. 20 inhabitants) and Mori (313 m, approx. 15 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Alviano , Amelia , Attigliano and Graffignano ( VT ).

history

The area around Lugnano was inhabited by the time of the Romans at the latest , who built Poggio Gramignano there in the 1st century BC. Built. The cemetery from the early 5th century, known as the “Necropoli dei bambini”, is of supraregional importance and shows on the one hand a malaria epidemic and on the other hand shows the rituals used to banish the fear of the return of the dead.

The history of today's place begins around the year 1000, when the Counts of Montemarte ruled the place. After that followed Bovaciani di Todi in Todi from 1147. After brief other rulers who followed Orsini in the early 14th century, after which there was Tommaso di Alviano from Alviano from 1370 with the favor of the Papal States . In 1449 Pope Pius II had the city walls reinforced. Nevertheless, the city was conquered by Bartolomeo d'Alviano in 1497 and by his brothers Bernardino and Aloisio d'Alviano from Alviano in Ghibellia in 1502 . Six years later, the place declares its own statutes (Statuto della Terra di Lugnano).

  • L'Antiquarium , Antiquarium in the Palazzo Comunale, contains parts of the Romanesque Villa Poggio Gramignano .
  • Chiesa e Convento dei Cappuccini , church and convent built in 1579, which was used by the Capuchins until 1928 .
  • Chiesa e Convento di San Francesco , church and convent built in 1229. The campanile dates from 1680. Contains the work Decollazione di San Giovanni Battista by Livio Agresti (* 1508, † 1580), also called Ritius or Ricciutello , Italian painter of the Renaissance and Mannerism .
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria del Ramo (also called di Ramici ), church outside the town center near the road to Attigliano. Made in the early 15th century.
  • Chiesa di Santa Chiara , church in the town center on Piazza Marconi. Contains an organ that was built in 1756 by Johann Konrad Wörle (1701–1777, also Giovanni Corrado Verlé ). This organ is now in the Collegiata and was restored in 2005 by Marco Laurenti.
  • Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta , main church in the historic center from the 12th century with a portico from 1230 in front. Inside, the barrel-vaulted central nave is flanked by aisles with groined vaults . The capitals of the separating columns show partly figurative, partly ornamental motifs. The floor is decorated with a cosmatic mosaic . Behind the altar you can see the “Assumption of Mary” with Saints Francis and Sebastian by Nicolò Alunno (c. 1482), in a chapel on the right the “Beheading of the Baptist” by Livio Agresti (c. 1571).
  • Palazzo Pennone , also called Palazzo Ridolfi-Farnese , building in the center of the town from 1650.
  • Piazza della Rocca , the highest point in the place where the Palazzo Vannicelli stands.
  • Poggio Gramignano , also called Villa Rustica , Roman villa just outside the town center from the 1st century BC BC, inhabited until the 3rd century AD, then used as a necropolis until the 5th century .
  • Porta Sant'Antonio (also called Porta della Terra di Lugnano ), still existing city gate from the 9th century, which was built at the will of Pope Leo IV .
