history

The name comes from the Italian Guardia ( Wacht / Wache ), which refers to the location in the lower Tiber Valley ( Teverina ). Around 1035 refugees from nearby Marruto built the castle Castello del Poggio ( Podium Guadejae ). Guardea is mentioned for the first time in writing in 1154. In the 12th century, the ruling family of the Baschi from Baschi built the guard that is still visible today (formerly Guardege , now also called Guardea Vecchia or Castello Vecchio ). In the 13th century the place passed to the rulers from Alviano, who lasted until 1581. In 1600 the Monaldeschi family gained control of the place, but after the death of Paolo Monaldeschi the rule was divided. Poggio came to the Raimondi family , while Guardege, after the marriage of Caterina Monaldeschi Della Cervara with Ludovico di Marsciano, came to the Marsciano family from Marsciano . The place was then under the control of the Papal States and was in 1860 with the Risorgimento part of the state of Italy. Guardea Vecchia moved the main town to the valley floor at the beginning of the 17th century .
