Baschi is an Italian commune with 2683 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Terni in the Umbria region .

Location of the municipality of Baschi in the province of Terni

The community extends over around 68 km². It is located about 50 km southwest of the regional capital Perugia and about 35 km northwest of the provincial capital Terni on the Tiber in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1665 GR / G.

The districts include Acqualoreto, Civitella del Lago, Collelungo and Morre.

The neighboring municipalities are Montecchio , Orvieto and Todi ( PG ).

history

The place probably originated at the end of the 8th century, when Ugolino and / or Galino di Biscaglia appeared in Bizkaia with Charlemagne in Italy and received the Castrum Vetus from him . The place later received the nickname (Le Basque) from Ugolino, which is still eponymous today (Baschi means the Basques in Italian ). The place was first mentioned in writing in 1235 as the property of the Baschi family.

  • Chiesa di San Donato , church in the Collelungo district from the 13th century.
  • Chiesa parrocchiale di San Nicolò , 14th century church renovated by Ippolito Scalza (Orvieto, 1532–1617) from 1575 to 1586 . It contains a winged altar with the works of San Giacomo di Compostella, La Madonna in trono col bambino e angeli, and San Nicola by Giovanni di Paolo .
  • Parco fluviale del Tevere , nature reserve of the WWF since 1995, in which the place participates alongside four other municipalities of the province of Terni ( Alviano , Guardea , Montecchio and Orvieto) as well as those of Monte Castello di Vibio and Todi (PG).
  • Santuario della Pasquarella , also called Santa Maria dello Scoglio , sanctuary in the districts of Acqualoreto and Morre from the 11th century.
