Magicka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magicka is on the Norse mythology -based action-adventure - computer game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. It was released on Steam for Windows on January 25, 2011. In addition, a free demo was made available for download. The game was developed by eight students from Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå , Sweden , and it has sold over 200,000 times in the first 17 days.

action

In Magicka up to four magicians fight against an evil wizard and his creatures. The world is loosely based on Nordic mythology , with inspiration from other fantasy games such as Warhammer or Diablo . In addition, there are many humorous references to other film and game titles such as Star Wars , The Legend of Zelda , World of Warcraft , Matrix , Neverwinter Nights , 300 and The Knights of the Coconut .

Style of play

Magicka is a (pseudo-) isometric action adventure (similar to Diablo ), with a bird's-eye view of a cartoon-like 3D world. The game character is always in the middle of the screen, only the background moves around the player. Up to four players at the same time take on the role of a magician in order to stop the evil wizard who is causing turmoil in the world. The campaign consists of 13 levels.

In contrast to RPG elements , which traditionally dominate many magic- based games, Magicka has no character class structure . In addition, there is no mana or energy that would prevent you from using spells. As a result, spells can be cast without limit and do not cost a finite resource. There are exceptionally few power-up items in the game , as one of the developers' goals was to divert the focus from keeping material things in the game.

The player is equipped with a magic wand , which is used to cast spells. He also has a traditional second hand weapon. More of both weapons can be found in the game. Staffs can have an "active property" which allows the player to cast a spell without first selecting the elements. Furthermore, the staff can have a “passive property”, which has an effect that lasts as long as the staff is equipped. The traditional weapons can be categorized according to range, attack speed, damage and secondary effects.

The game is completely set to music, but there are no synchronized versions, so the Swedish original can always be heard.

Spells and elements

Magicka

The game has eight different elements, up to five of which can be combined at the same time to cast a spell:

  • water
  • Life
  • sign
  • cold
  • lightning
  • Arcane
  • earth
  • Fire

In addition, some items automatically become new when they are both used in a spell. The new element only occupies one of the five available element spaces:

  • Water and fire give off steam
  • Water and frost give ice

Each spell can be cast as a projectile or beam, as an area spell, on the player himself, or as an enchantment on the player's traditional weapon. All elements tend to cause damage except for life, which heals and the shield, which creates barriers.

To cast a spell, the player first repeatedly presses the keys associated with the items to select them. Then the player can trigger the spell with another key.

Special spells, so-called "Magckien", can only be cast with special combinations and produce unique effects, but also require the player to find the associated magic books. An example of this is "Haste", which allows the player to move quickly for a short time. "Haste" is cast by lightning + arcane + fire.

Some combinations, especially those with ice or earth, require a charge time. Other combinations give no spell at all, such as lightning and earth, as they neutralize each other.

Elements can also interact with each other: if a player is wet, lightning will damage them and break the spell. Lightning spells cast on wet enemies are particularly damaging. When you use fire on yourself you dry, but when you are dry and fire is on yourself you are on fire.

extension

On March 1, 2011, a trailer for an add-on that takes place in Vietnam was released . As in the main game, there are some references to popular films and games. The end of the trailer contains a reference to Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Vietnam . The used song Surfin 'Bird by The Trashmen appears in the famous war film Full Metal Jacket and in Battlefield Vietnam .

successor

In the course of the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014 Magicka 2 was announced, which is to appear for Windows and PlayStation 4.
