Neverwinter Nights (common abbreviation: NWN) is a computer role-playing game published by Atari in 2002 for Windows , Mac OS and Linux . It is based on the 3rd edition of the D&D set of rules and was developed by the Canadian development studio BioWare . It takes place in the vicinity of the eponymous city of Niewinter (English: Neverwinter). In addition to a single player campaign, NWN offers extensive multiplayer functionality and an extensive editor for creating free single player and multiplayer modules.
action
A terrible plague rages in the city of Niewinter in the north of the Forgotten Realms . To fight the plague, four creatures were brought to Niewinter, which are needed for the manufacture of a medicine. For this purpose, all four will be accommodated in the adventurer's academy, where adventurers have just completed their training. You see the academy fall victim to an attack; the four creatures escape and spread out over the neighborhoods of the city. During the search for these beings, a huge conspiracy is revealed step by step, starting in the city of Luskan.
The game also tells the tragic story of the fall of the female paladin of Tyr, Princess Aribeth de Tylmarande. After her lover is executed as a supposed co-conspirator at the request of the citizens of Niewinter, she seeks revenge against the perpetrators of the plague. Misguided by grief and anger, she finally joins the enemy troops of Luskan and leads them against her own city.
Gameplay
As in the original Dungeons & Dragons , the adventure begins with the creation of the character. You choose the gender, the people (human, elf, dwarf, etc.), the class (fighter, rogue, magician, cleric, etc.), the disposition (good / bad or righteous / chaotic), attributes (examples: strength, skill , Intelligence), skills (examples: skills, talents, spells), appearance and name. Contrary to the usual D&D tradition, Neverwinter Nights does not provide a hero group to the player without add-ons . It is only possible, as in Diablo II , to be accompanied by a single computer-controlled helper who can only be rudimentarily controlled by the player. The two add-ons increase the number of possible companions, however, and more options for intervention are offered, such as B. Access to the companion's inventory.
You steer your own main character through the three-dimensional game world from a third-person perspective . Neverwinter Nights is the first D&D adventure that can be hiked through completely in real-time 3D graphics. Patch versions and add-ons that improve ergonomics make it more and more convenient for the player to free the view from the originally relatively rigid camera perspective and to perform more free all-round pans or to act more or less in first person perspective .
The dialog guidance with its options is designed as a tree structure . As is customary in computer role-playing games, the character gains experience points by killing and looting frightful figures and monsters, by finding, transporting or using objects and by solving other puzzles, etc., which the character gains from a certain point Raise the threshold by one more level. With each level up, the character can be improved in many ways (more life points, more powerful spells, additional skills, etc.).
Multiplayer mode
Similar to the classic pen & paper role-playing game , you can also "lead" a collective adventure. In NWN, a game master has a lot of possibilities to convey a unique story to the other actors. For example, you slip into the role of a mysterious client or surprisingly randomly fiends and mysterious objects appear.
Aurora toolset
The main program comes with an editor called Aurora Toolset , which was also used by the developers to create the official campaign. With the Aurora toolset, emphasis was placed on ease of use, so that interested players can create their own modules even without much programming knowledge. Prefabricated environmental areas can be put together as desired in the manner of a modular system and filled with creatures, objects and special buildings.
For experienced hobby programmers, the toolset contains an editor and a compiler for the C-based script language Neverwinter Nights Script ( NWN-Script ). This means that you can create your own behavior for almost all objects in a module. However, system security in multiplayer mode has priority, sometimes has a restrictive effect or must always be considered.
In so-called HAK files, new content can be offered for download with the module, otherwise it is not possible to play such an extended module. Modules created with the Aurora toolset for Neverwinter Nights may only be published free of charge due to a clause in the Terms of Use. Exceptions are the premium modules created by BioWare itself .
The great success of Neverwinter Nights is due not least to the distribution of this editor. A large fan base formed on the NWVault website, who regularly created their own modules and content and thus kept the game alive longer than usual. BioWare supports this development by not only fixing gaps in the program with patches , but also by adding additional functions to the editor. The add-ons additionally strengthen the game with new creatures, new types of landscapes or the like. However, the player must have the appropriate add-ons in order to be able to play modules with this content.
Above all, critics complain about the limited variety of the editor, which, especially at the beginning, offered only a few possible variations for the placeable objects and thus made extensions through HAK files the rule rather than the exception. In addition, the accusation has often been raised that BioWare essentially only brought one editor onto the market, but left the development of interesting content to the fan base. This refers to the content-related criticism of the official campaign that came with it, which was not well received by some players.
The last patch 1.69, with which Bioware discontinues its support and extensively expands the program, was released on July 9th, 2008 after a long test phase and lively exchange with the community (previously only as an unofficial extension in German).
development
Neverwinter Nights was announced jointly by Interplay and BioWare at the GenCon games fair during the development of Baldur's Gate 2 in August 1999. However, after legal disputes between BioWare and Interplay, the cooperation between the two companies ended prematurely. It finally appeared through the French publisher Infogrames , who published it under its Atari label.
reception
Neverwinter Nights received very good reviews (game rankings: 88.96% / Metacritic: 91 out of 100).
The game was named Best Computer RPG of 2003 by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences . At the time of the successor title Neverwinter Nights 2 , the game had sold about three million times.

Neverwinter Nights - The Shadow of Undernzit ( SvU ) was developed by Floodgate Entertainment for BioWare and was released in June 2003. To play this add-on , the base game must be installed.
action
The plot of the new single player campaign begins in the town of Hügelspitze and takes place around the same time as the outbreak of the epidemic in Niewinter. However, there is no closer connection to the plot of the main game, as the player will not have the opportunity to get to Niewinter or the neighboring regions. Now and then you hear from an NPC about the events in Niewinter.
There was once a nation of powerful magicians called Nesseril in the Forgotten Realms. Their power was so great that they could even make their gigantic cities soar through the air as if the laws of gravity were meaningless to this people. But the unbridled ambition of some magicians destroyed their civilization and the floating cities collapsed to the ground, wiping out the inhabitants. The Nesseril were largely forgotten over time. But even many generations later, the remains of their cities are still filled with powerful magic and dark creatures. A mysterious creature tries to take control of Undernzit, one of the once magnificent cities, and to usurp world domination with the help of the magic of the Nesseril.
The journey takes the player from the snow-covered regions of the high forest through the dry Anauroch desert to Undernzit, where the decisive battle with this creature takes place.
Innovations
Companion Inventory
With Shadow of Undernzit , the player's followers are significantly more important than in the main campaign. More interaction with the companion gives their personality more depth, and in addition, the previously rather silent mercenaries now increasingly interfere in the conversations between player and non-player characters.
In addition, the player can now manage the inventory of his mercenary; however, the limit of one mercenary per player remains.
Prestige classes and new talents
The possibilities for character development have been expanded with the introduction of five prestige classes. Prestige classes are specializations of the existing standard classes. They emphasize certain aspects of these professions and are associated with special talents, for example the assassin as a supplement to previous villain, bard or ranger characters. They differ from the standard classes in that certain conditions must first be met before you can advance to these sub-classes when you upgrade your character. The player must therefore plan accordingly when planning his character if he intends to choose one of these classes later. There were also 30 new talents.
Magic and monsters
SvU offers players of magical characters more than 50 new spells. Among them are old acquaintances such as the various Bigby sayings (Bigby's clenched fist, gripping and crushing hand), which could already be used in Baldur's Gate 2 .
SvU introduces a total of 16 new creatures. The developers have selected a few particularly unusual monsters from the range of possible D&D beings, such as: B. the basilisk , which petrifies with his gaze, pseudo- dragons or formians. The latter look like a mixture of human and ant. All creatures such as rats and gnolls previously released with patches are also included in the add-on.
Technical
The hobbyists and game masters among the players receive numerous expansions to the tool set, including three new plate sets that can also be seen in the campaign (rural winter, ruins, desert). In addition, module builders have been given many new script commands and functions.
Some bugs caused problems , which are probably due to the fact that they absolutely wanted to keep the release date at the end of June (exactly one year after the appearance of Neverwinter Nights ). The patch policy BioWares and Ataris also triggered a dissatisfaction among the European players, which meant that players of the non-English version could not play on English servers for almost two months because they were already one patch version further.

Neverwinter Nights - Die Horde des Unterreichs ( HdU ) was published in March 2004. To play this add-on the base game must be installed. The installation of the first extension, Shadows from Undernzit , is optional.
action
The single player campaign begins with the arrival of the player character in Tiefwasser, one of the larger cities of Abeir-Toril, which immediately follows on from the previous add-on Shadow of Undernzit . Returning from the shadowy plain, one finds the city in a state of siege. Groups of dark elves ( drow ) and creatures from the Unterreich - a gigantic refuge under the surface of the earth - marauding through the streets, and the Lord of the Unterberg (a huge underground labyrinth , located vertically between the city of Tiefwasser and the Unterreich) named Halaster (a crazy magician) seems to have disappeared.
As a newly arrived hero, one is asked to shed some light on this matter. After you've been robbed of all your equipment by a drow spy, you can choose two of your former companions in arms from Neverwinter Nights to descend with them into the lower mountain.
In the course of the game you come across viewers, orcs , illithids, even more drow beings - as well as the Valsharess (a superior of the drow who wants to subdue and rule the lower kingdom and consequently also the surface). In the end, the fate of the entire world rests in the hands of the player character.
In The Hordes of the Unterreichs the player character starts at character level 15. From level 21 you become an "epic character": Like a demigod, you are now able to choose powerful talents and spells and increase your character values a lot. Magicians and clerics enjoy the opportunity to cast “epic spells”, e.g. B. Summon and control a red dragon or cause a devastating hell storm.
Innovations
With Hordes of the Unterreich , the previous limitation to an accompanying character was lifted. In the game, the player can now hire two followers at the same time. The limit of the maximum experience points has been increased significantly. Player characters can use it to reach epic levels 21 to 40 according to D&D rules. The possibilities of character development have been expanded with six new prestige classes as well as new talents and spells. A general innovation is that many decisions (handing over powerful artifacts , talking to henchmen, etc.) have an even greater impact on the end of the game and the future of the world. The scope of the editor has also been expanded with the addition of four new plate sets, 16 new creatures and new tool functionalities.
Premium modules
The premium modules were official payment modules that were only available online in the BioWare shop. For a one-time fee, these modules were released for download and linked to the personal serial number of the main game. They were created by BioWare mostly in cooperation with community developers and offer new, completed actions in professional quality. The texts were partially set to music and the modules were equipped with particularly high-quality additional content, most of which, however, are not available in the editor for your own use. The prerequisite is possession of the basic game and both add-ons as well as an online connection when starting and loading the module. The modules are only available in English. Published:
- Shadowguard (released November 10, 2004)
- Witch's Wake (Revised version of the free initial release, only available in conjunction with ShadowGuard, released November 10, 2004)
- Kingmaker (released November 10, 2004)
- Pirates of the Sword Coast (released June 23, 2005)
- Infinite Dungeons (released May 26, 2006)
- Wyvern Crown of Cormyr (released September 14, 2006)
Since Atari showed a negative attitude towards premium modules over the course of time and no further approvals for premium modules were granted, the following work, originally conceived as premium modules, was released free of charge for the NWN community:
- Darkness over Daggerford (Developed by Ossian Studios )
- Tyrants of the Moonsea
Since August 30, 2009, at the request of Atari, the premium modules are no longer available via the BioWare shop and since mid-2010 they have no longer been offered for re-download, even for previous buyers. However, the authentication servers continue to function so that modules that have already been purchased and installed can still be used.
Free content
Privately developed single player modules
As of December 18, 2008, IGN's NWVault (see web links) contains over 5000 privately developed, free modules in well-known as well as own settings , but mostly in English. With the Aurora Toolset editor (see above), amateurs with a little technical understanding and enough time can comparatively easily construct dramas, romances, comedies or horror stories from short stories to multi-part epics. Attention is drawn to the Hall of Fame of the NWVault. You can also create HAK files for the community yourself. The game is generally very flexible.
Community Expansion Pack
The CEP (significantly extended with version 2) was not produced by BioWare, but is an unofficial extension created by hobby developers. It can be downloaded for free and installed regardless of the official extensions.
This add-on does not contain any new game modules (adventure), but extends the level editor with additional design options (creatures, utensils, environment designs, etc.). This gives module developers more options when designing their own adventures. Due to the limited variety of the original editor, the CEP developed into a standard for later fan modules and persistent worlds. As a result, installation has become mandatory for most of the downloadable and online playable add-ons.
Persistent worlds
Persistent Worlds are virtual worlds created and operated by the community. In contrast to other games or other game modes, a persistent world has no defined “end” (the game world ends when the server is switched off). As a rule, persistent worlds run continuously, the servers are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Neverwinter Nights can be connected to SQL servers using additional software components developed by the community .
The story just continues, so the world exists without its own presence and every player with his or her actions ideally has the opportunity to influence the history of the world. Persistent worlds are similar in structure to MMORPGs . Playing on the community's online servers is all free. A directory of the persistent worlds can also be found in the RPG Board forum.

Follow-up projects
Neverwinter Nights 2
The direct successor to Neverwinter Nights was announced in 2004 and released in Europe on November 2, 2006. The game was no longer developed by BioWare, but by Obsidian Entertainment . These were former Interplay employees of Black Isle Studios , who had already produced Baldur's Gate and developed the games Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment .
In the period from September 2007 to April 2009, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir were also released, two official expansions and a download campaign entitled Mysteries of Westgate .
Neverwinter Nights Mobile
In September 2004, the American company JAMDAT Mobile published an offshoot of the game developed by Floodgate Entertainment with its own storyline for mobile phones. As the foster child of a druid in the forests of Kryptgarden, north of Deep Water, the player character investigates the appearance of black smoke, which transforms the inhabitants of the forest into malevolent creatures.
The game was not offered as a full download, instead the content was streamed to the phone when required . The saved states were also created centrally on a server. This enabled the buyer to run the game on different phone devices, but remained dependent on network reception to play. Neverwinter Nights Mobile received positive reviews. The large size of the game compared to other mobile games was particularly emphasized. The close proximity to D&D regulations and the control system, which is well adapted to telephones, were also praised. On the other hand, the somewhat one-sided, combative gameplay, the predictable plot, very similar levels and the poor graphics performance were criticized .
Neverwinter
Atari announced on August 23, 2010 for the fourth quarter of 2011 a new MMORPG in the region of the city of Niewinter. Neverwinter is developed by Cryptic Studios . There is no direct reference to the titles developed by BioWare and Obsidian; however, many D&D elements of the Forgotten Realms remain - e.g. B. Places like Luskan, Niewinter, Waterdeep, Baldur's Gate, Amn etc. as well as a tool set ( foundry ) for creating your own epic quest campaigns that can be exchanged, experienced and discussed worldwide.
After Cryptic Studios was acquired by Perfect World Entertainment, one has the game as a Free2Play - MMORPG rewritten. The game was released on April 30, 2013 as open beta and switched to regular operation on June 2, 2013. After Fury of the Feywild and Shadowmantle at the end of 2013, the third expansion was released in May 2014 with Curse of Icewind Dale .
Heroes of Neverwinter
In June 2011, Atari, in cooperation with Liquid Entertainment, announced Heroes of Neverwinter as a game application for the social network Facebook . It is based on the D&D set of rules of the 4th edition and offers the player smaller adventures that he can play alone with a group of six heroes or together with friends within the network. The social interaction possibilities are a main feature of the game. When it was first published, there were a total of 45 missions, but an editor allows players to create their own adventures and share them with friends. The game's combat system is turn-based. The game is basically free to use, but offers players certain advantages in return for payment. An open beta started in September 2011.
