Unlimited Adventures (English for "unlimited adventure"), also Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures , FRUA for short, is a proprietary development system for creating computer role-playing games . It was developed by MicroMagic in 1993 and published by Strategic Simulations (SSI) for DOS and Mac OS and is an offshoot of the successful Gold Box series.

There are numerous fan sites that provide additional levels , graphics and hacks . Over 700 games were created and published with it. There are also other fan projects based on FRUA.

Game description

The gameplay largely corresponds to that of the GoldBox series and takes place in the Forgotten Realms world of Dungeons & Dragons (2nd Edition). The color palette has been increased from 16 to 256 colors. The player steers himself and a maximum of five other team members through various aboveground and underground areas and has to solve various tasks and fight monsters. Usually, a 3D view is displayed in a small window on the left side of the screen, which is gradually updated as you run. If the group encounters people or monsters, a portrait is displayed there instead. On the right side the data of the characters are displayed; There is a wide text window at the bottom, as much of the information is given in writing.

Battles are shown in an isometric perspective and are turn-based, i.e. alternating and not in real time. Your own and opposing characters are displayed as small sprites . When traveling overland, you usually switch to a large area map, which is also accessible. The position of the group is indicated by a point. It is controlled with the direction keys on the keyboard or with the mouse.

A finished game The Heirs to Skull Crag is included .

Game development

Each game can have up to four overland maps and 36 dungeons ( Dungeons exist). In addition to various graphic sets of walls, doors, stairs, teleporters and the like, a database also contains images and data of 16 non-player characters and over 112 monsters. Some elements were carried over from earlier SSI games, such as Eye of the Beholder . In addition, some of your own graphics and sprites can be imported in PCX and LBM format. Some basic data, such as background terrain, walls or ceilings, can not be changed without hacks . In a monster editor there are setting options for names, properties, values and objects carried by the creatures.

The game world can be created on a map in a top view as well as in a 3D window. The programmer then sets various events and enters text messages.

Finished game designs can be printed out and passed on as a file; an optional password protection prevents access and changes. However, an edition of the original software is required to play. A VGA graphics card and hard disk with 5 MB free memory must be available as system requirements.
