development

The success of the first Baldur's Gate , developed by BioWare and Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment in 1998 , led to the development of the sequel Baldur's Gate II with the Throne of Bhaal expansion pack, the Icewind Dale game and its sequel, and Planescape: Torment . Black Isle Studios had started work on Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound in 2003 , but Interplay faced a major financial crisis that year and closed the Black Isle studio and canceled the game. Interplay lost the license to produce D&D video games to Atari in 2008 , which produced Neverwinter Nights and the sequel. The games publisher Wizards of the Coast had meanwhile acquired the rights to D&D with the takeover of Tactical Studies Rules in 1997 and subsequently published further versions of the rules.

Several developers, such as Brian Fargo , a former Interplay developer and founder of inXile Entertainment , and Feargus Urquhart of Obsidian Entertainment , tried over the years to obtain the license rights for the production of a third part of Baldur's Gate . Larian Studios had also been interested in a sequel to the Baldur's Gate franchise for some time when they first contacted Wizards about this after the release of Divinity: Original Sin around 2014. At the time, however, Wizards was of the opinion that the studio was too inexperienced in the industry to be entrusted with the Baldur's Gate license. Larian Studios first developed Divinity: Original Sin II , which was released in September 2017. The publisher wizard had been impressed with the advance materials for the game , so that he finally turned to Larian with an offer to develop a new Baldur's Gate .

Larian Studios first promoted Baldur's Gate III in the week leading up to E3 2019 and confirmed the release for both Microsoft Windows and Stadia. A prequel tabletop game for the video game under development was released in September 2019 by license holder Wizards of the Coast.
