Arena of War is a computer role-playing game with a free-to-play business model for the mobile platforms Android and iOS . It was released on October 18, 2013 and is based on a license from the Dungeons & Dragons RPG rulebook .

Gameplay

Arena of War was developed as a companion product to the events of the second division (English: The Second Sundering ), a game world-changing event around the publication of the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons rulebook . The core of the game, however, is essentially the battles against computer opponents, which are clad in a rough framework by means of some text panels. It was based on a free-to-play business model, which means that many features of the game are basically free. However, the start of a mission quest requires energy, the pool of which is limited and only recharges over a long period of time. In return for real money, the player can accelerate this and buy additional equipment in an integrated shop.

The player can choose between different predefined characters, which are based on the D&D rules. With these he can choose between quests of different difficulty levels and with different quest energy costs. Each quest is written in a superficial framework narrative d. dressed and consists of several rounds of combat on differently designed playing cards. The fight is turn-based and based on a physical mini-game . The game figure can be shot across the playing field similar to a slingshot and comparable to the game principle of Angry Birds by holding down, pulling and releasing the figure on the touchscreen. The player can determine the angle of fire. If the playing figure hits an opposing figure with this shot, this counts as a hit and the figure hit suffers damage. Obstacles and borders make the character ricochet unless they are traps (e.g. bombs). In some places there is no border, in this case the character appears again on the opposite side of the screen when crossing the border, which can also be used tactically in combat. If you meet a friendly pawn, it is also moved according to the angle of impact. If it also hits an opponent as a result, this also triggers a hit. If all opponents are defeated, the round is won. The player only receives a reward when all rounds of the quest series have been won. If he loses, he must either abort the quest without a reward or start again by using a healing potion, which in rare cases can be received as a reward or purchased for money. If the player cancels the quest, he can start it again, but again consumes quest energy.

As a reward, the player receives items, spells and potential companions that he can use to improve his adventurer. The rewards are given at random at the end of a quest and can also be distributed multiple times. Objects, spells and companions obtained multiple times can be combined with each other to increase their strength.

development

DeNA announced the work on D&D licensed games in May 2015 . It was integrated into the event campaign The Sundering (English for "Die Teilung"), which accompanied the change from the 4th to the 5th edition of the rules ("D&D Next"). The development work was carried out by the Chilean subsidiary DeNA Santiago. On October 18, 2013, Arena of War was initially released for iOS. The Android version appeared a week later.

“An average slingshot physics game spoiled by a pitiful fantasy veneer and an irritating freemium payment structure”

"An average slingshot physics game botched by a pitiful fantasy facade and an irritating freemium payment structure"

- Matt Thrower : Pocket Gamer

“You'd likely expect an action-RPG in a mobile D&D game; if you were an idealist, like me, you'd hope for a turn-based dungeon crawler a la Warhammer Quest. But what you get instead is basically a top-down Angry Birds dressed in the fantasy trappings of D&D. The core mechanic is drag-and-release. It's more billiards than dungeon crawling. "

“You'd probably expect a mobile D&D game to be an action RPG; if you were idealistic like me, you would hope for a Warhammer Quest branded turn-based dungeon crawler . But instead you basically get an Angry Birds from a bird's eye view in fantasy garb from Dungeons & Dragons. The core mechanics are "pull and let go". That's more billiards than dungeon crawling. "

- Erik Kain : Forbes

The game was discontinued during 2014.
