Heroes of Neverwinter was for the social media platform Facebook developed computer role-playing game from Liquid Entertainment and Atari . It was a free-to-play title with social gaming functions and is a licensed game based on the role-playing rules Dungeons & Dragons . It was discontinued in December 2012.

Gameplay

General

The player created his own character according to race (human, eldar / elf, dragonkin and halfling) and class (fighter, thief, magician and cleric) as well as by distributing points based on common abilities of the D&D rules. Starting from the central point of contact in the city of Niewinter, the player could hire companions and accept orders in the local tavern. The associated dungeons consisted of several rooms that were divided into square fields like a chessboard and connected to one another. The playing field was viewed from an isometric perspective . The exploration of the dungeon and the fight against the enemies that appeared in it took place in turn-based moves. In the battles, each character had a certain number of action points available, which he could use for movement, attacks, spells or the use of objects. In some cases, defeated enemies left loot behind. If the player picked it up, he was given the choice between three initially hidden objects from which he had to choose one. Experience points were awarded to the character for killed enemies and completed orders. With sufficient experience points, the character rose in character level, which enabled them to acquire new skills or improve existing ones.

From the 10th level on, a player could create his own maps with the help of an activated level editor and make them available to other players. The hired companions could also include characters from Facebook friends, who in return received gold and experience points. An observer mode also allowed the Facebook friend to watch the game.

Monetization

In principle, the game was playable for free, but the flow of the game was hampered by an energy bar. If their value was too low, the player could not start a new adventure and had to wait until it had regenerated after a certain waiting time. Alternatively, the premium currency astral diamonds could be purchased for real money and the energy bar replenished. There were also various convenience and help functions that could be used in this way. This included, for example, the ability to see all three options in advance when choosing loot and then be able to select them specifically.

development

Heroes of Neverwinter was announced in June 2011. It is based on the 4th edition of the rules. In August, Atari gave back the role play license after ten years after a legal dispute with D&D rights holder Hasbro , but was allowed to continue marketing Heroes of Neverwinter and Daggerdale . In early October 2011, the game went into open beta. For Halloween , Liquid Entertainment released a thematic update with new equipment and missions.

“Heroes of Neverwinter surprised. Anyone expecting a kind of Farmville or a child-friendly, slimmed-down role play, will be amazed. Heroes of Neverwinter has a lot of a 'real' RPG, is reminiscent of a board game and has surprising depth. "

- Andreas Bertits : Gamona

In December 2012, the game was discontinued in favor of the never-released mobile game Dungeons & Dragons: Warband .
