Sword Coast Legends is a computer role-playing game from n-Space and Digital Extremes , which is based on the role-playing game rules Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) and is set in the campaign world Forgotten Realms . It was released on October 20, 2015 for Windows , Linux , macOS .

action

The player character is a member of an adventurers' guild on the Sword Coast that protects people from bandits and hostile creatures. But in nightmares he meets a demon who announces the impending end of the world to him. Shortly afterwards the guild is attacked and almost all of its members are killed. The player should now reveal the background.

Gameplay

Sword Coast Legends offers both a single player campaign and a cooperative multiplayer mode with a game master function. At the beginning, the player creates his own character based on a selection of typical D&D classes (cleric, fighter, paladin, ranger, thief, magician) and races (dwarf, human, elf, half-elf, halfling). In the single player he can add up to three additional companions to his adventure group, which he can control at any time. The game is presented from an overview perspective, the camera can be rotated and zoomed freely. The battles are fought in real time, but can be paused at any time by pressing a button to give orders. The majority consists of fights and the completion of tasks for which the character receives adventure points. With the appropriate number of points, there is a level rise, in which the character can improve and learn new skills, for example.

The multiplayer mode is played entirely in real time and does not have a pause function. Up to four players can compete against a game master. The game master selects the game level and has, among other things, the option of placing enemy creatures and traps in them to prevent the other players from advancing. He can also take control of his creatures in combat.

development

The game was jointly developed by n-Space and Digital Extremes, under the direction of n-Spaces company president Dan Tudge, who previously u. a. worked as a director on Bioware's Dragon Age: Origins . The 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons set of rules served as the basis. The developers used the Unity engine . The music was composed by Inon Zur and recorded with the Prague Philharmonic .

The game's release was originally announced for September 9, 2015, then postponed to September 29, and finally scheduled for October 20. The release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was specified at the same time as 2016. In September 2015, the developer organized an early access phase in which pre-orderers were given access to the preliminary version of the game in advance.

In March 2016, n-Space ceased operations, before the release of the first DLC Rage of Demons and the console versions. However, the PC version of the Rage of Demons DLC was made available for free to all buyers of the original game on May 15, 2016. It was also announced that Sword Coast Legends would be released later this year for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

reception

Sword Coast Legends was traded in advance as a possible spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights . However, the finished game mostly only received average ratings, the Metacritic average of the Windows version is 61%. Criticisms were, for example, the clear deviations from the D&D set of rules, a less thrilling plot, but also the adventure design that is far too simple compared to titles like Neverwinter Nights and the limited range of functions of the game and the editor. Although the game offers fast, entertaining gameplay, especially for entertaining co-op games, it cannot meet the expectations raised by the license and earlier D&D games. In terms of play, the game is more reminiscent of Dragon Age than Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights .

In response to the criticism, the developers announced that they would continue to develop the game through free community packs.
