List of official D&D computer games
This is a list of all computer games based on the Dungeons & Dragons set of rules or whose action takes place in one of the official game worlds.
License history
The first known computer game implementations of the D&D set of rules ( dnd , dungeon ) were created on mainframes in the university environment. However, these were not officially licensed by the manufacturer Tactical Studies Rules (TSR). In 1980-82, the US toy company Mattel published an electronic board game, an LCD game and finally two console games for the company's own Intellivision game console. These received good reviews, but were only rudimentary implementations of regulations or fire uses that lacked a distinctive use of the license.
In 1987, the US game developer and publisher Strategic Simulations (SSI) signed an exclusive license agreement with TSR that lasted until 1995. During this period, SSI published 35 titles in different genres, on different platforms and on various campaign worlds. SSI's first in-house development, Pool of Radiance, turned out to be a great success and became an influential genre classic. Pool of Radiance laid the technical foundation for the so-called Gold Box series and the Savage Frontier series developed on behalf of Stormfront Studios . Went in this series in 1991 also as a joint project of Stormfront, SSI and AOL developed Neverwinter Nights out, the first graphical massively multiplayer online role-playing game applies (MMORPG) and successfully ran until 1997th After the successes of the early days, however, the quality and sales of the AD&D games developed by SSI have decreased increasingly since the early 1990s. In 1994 the previously independent developer was taken over by Mindscape, the focus shifted more and more to the successful in-house productions in the field of military simulations and strategy games. TSR also ran into serious financial problems, with more than $ 20 million in debt. In 1994 the exclusive agreement was therefore no longer extended and expired in 1995.
TSR started to license its campaign worlds individually. Sierra Entertainment acquired the Birthright license, Acclaim Entertainment secured Ravenloft and Interplay Entertainment was awarded the contract for the Forgotten Realms and Planescape . The first publications under the new model also fell short of expectations, so that both Acclaim and Sierra did not publish any more AD&D games after the first publication ( Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft , Birthright: The Dark Alliance ) . Ultimately, only Interplay was able to celebrate success, which after two less successful first-time AD&D works ( Blood & Magic , Descent to Undermountain ) commissioned the young Canadian developer BioWare and its own, newly founded role-playing department at Black Isle Studios with the exploitation of the licenses. BioWare developed Baldur's Gate , which, together with the action role-playing game Diablo, was considered to be instrumental in the revival of the role-playing genre that was believed dead at the time. The engine developed for the game became the basis for four other titles along with several expansions, including the Planescape: Torment developed by Black Isle , which received high critical praise for its story design and also became a popular genre classic.
In 1997 TSR had to agree to a purchase offer from competitor Wizards of the Coast due to the ongoing financial problems and was taken over in full. For its part, Wizards of the Coast was acquired by Hasbro in 1999 . The practice of separately issued licenses was abandoned under the new owner. In 2001 Hasbro sold its computer games division to the French publisher Infogrames (later Atari SA ). The deal also included a 15-year D&D license with an option for a further five years . After Interplay had gradually lost its license, Atari remained as the only licensee. Under Atari's flag, Neverwinter Nights , which was also developed by BioWare, was released in 2002 , which was not an MMORPG despite its name being identical to Stormfront's 1991 game. In addition to the campaign, Neverwinter Nights from BioWare relied on an easy-to-use editor for developing your own adventure modules and a game master function with which the game situation of the pen & paper role-playing game could be simulated. The game sparked numerous modding activities . On August 15, 2011 Atari lost the D&D license again, which fell back to the rights holder Hasbro or its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast.
After the reverted rights to the manufacturer, with the exception of the MMORPG Neverwinter, which was still initiated by Atari, initially only smaller productions came onto the market. The Canadian online distributor Beamdog , founded by former BioWare employees, launched revised and expanded editions of Baldur's Gate , Baldur's Gate II , Icewind Dale , Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights , the so-called Enhanced Editions, under its developer label Overhaul Games . With the download extension Siege of Dragonspear (2016) for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition , Beamdog also released a new title based on the revised Infinity engine for the first time since 2002. Hasbro also signed licensing agreements with the development studios DeNA / Mobage, Playdek and BKOM for the development of D&D games for mobile devices, including the software implementation of board games. In 2015, n-Space, in collaboration with Digital Extremes, released Sword Coast Legends for the PC, which promoted both a campaign and easy-to-create multiplayer games. Shortly before the release of the first DLC Rage of Demons and the console version, however, n-Space had to close its doors and hand over the completion to Digital Extremes.
