Games have been developed for a wide variety of game consoles , including Sony's PlayStation 2 , Microsoft's Xbox, as well as Nintendo's GameCube , Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 . Acclaim Entertainment also developed for the PC to a lesser extent . The company was founded in 1987 in the state of Delaware and had sales branches in the USA , Great Britain , Germany , France , Spain , Australia and Japan .

history

In addition to software , Acclaim also developed and published solution books . Acclaim also bought Valiant Comics in 1994 . The publisher was later renamed Acclaim Comics and published comics with Valiant heroes until 2000 . The video games for Turok and Shadow Man are based on Valiant characters.

Acclaim had several separate development studios:

  • Acclaim Studios Austin (formerly Iguana Entertainment; USA)
  • Acclaim Studios Cheltenham (England)
  • Acclaim Studios London (formerly Probe Entertainment; England)
  • Acclaim Studios Manchester (England)
  • Acclaim Studios Salt Lake City (formerly Sculptured Software, Iguana West Software and then Iguana SLC; USA)
  • Acclaim Studios Teesside (formerly Optimus Software and Iguana UK; England)

Acclaim's economic situation was not good for a long time in the new millennium, the company had to lay off employees, close development studios and was banned from trading on NASDAQ . Nevertheless, Acclaim still presented games at the largest game fair, the E3 2004. On September 1, 2004, Acclaim applied for bankruptcy protection in the USA after the failure of talks with investors and lenders. This meant the sale of all remaining assets to repay debt and thus the final end; on December 7th the company inventory was auctioned.

The subsidiary Acclaim Germany planned to companies operating as publishers maintain foreign games, even if the marketing of the prestige title Juiced of THQ was acquired. To compensate, Acclaim Germany was able to secure the distribution rights for Neocron 2 in October 2004 . In January 2005, insolvency proceedings were opened against the assets of Acclaim Germany. Acclaim Germany’s managing director Uwe Fürstenberg moved to Midway’s German office in early 2005 .

In early 2006, Howard Marks, a former executive at Activision , founded Acclaim Games after buying the original Acclaim naming rights in mid-2005. Acclaim Games focuses on the distribution of Asian online games in North America and Europe; the trademark rights to many Acclaim titles were acquired by game companies such as Crave Entertainment and Throwback Entertainment. The company was closed on August 27, 2010. Some titles have been taken over by other publishers.
