NBA Jam is a basketball - arcade game , which of Midway developed and from 1993 by Acclaim Entertainment was marketed. In 1994 the company released ports for the consoles SNES , Sega Mega Drive , Sega Mega-CD , Sega Game Gear and Game Boy . The arcade version grossed more than a billion dollars in the first twelve months. The console conversions have also been sold more than five million times.

Game description

NBA Jam is one of the first arcade sports games to have an official sports league license. The game is based on the teams from the 1992/1993 NBA season. Each team in the game is represented by two players. As in many later NBA implementations, however, the most popular player in the league at the time, Michael Jordan , is not included as a character due to his license, which is separate from the NBA.
The course of the game describes two-on-two matches. The usual basketball rules are practically non-existent in the game; For example, there are no fouls and the ball cannot leave the field of play. The slam dunks in particular are exaggerated in the game. It is not uncommon for such a character to jump several meters high or far and possibly perform pirouettes in the process. Samples are used in the
game to create the appearance of a commentator. Examples of these phrases are “He's on Fire!” Or “Boom Shakalaka!”. For example, the first sentence is used when a player can score three times in a row. If he then hits again, he burns the net of the basketball hoop.

successor

In 1994, NBA Jam Tournament Edition was released. In addition to data from the then current NBA season, there are more than 120 NBA players in the game instead of the 54 players from its predecessor. In addition, new game modes and many Easter eggs have been implemented. For example, it is possible to play in a kind of super deformed mode. In addition to the implementations for the consoles on which the first part was published, Acclaim also marketed versions for Sega 32X , PlayStation , Sega Saturn , Atari Jaguar and MS-DOS .
The last arcade game in the series is NBA Jam Extreme, developed by Acclaim in 1996 . While this is displayed with 3D graphics, Midway continued to produce a 2D title with
NBA Hangtime . NBA Jam Extreme was also released for PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Windows .

Furthermore, in 1998 NBA Jam 99 for Nintendo 64 and GameBoy Color , 1999 NBA Jam 2000 for Nintendo 64, 2001 NBA Jam 2002 for Game Boy Advance and finally 2003 NBA Jam for PlayStation 2 and Xbox were released.

The latest part was released on October 5th, 2010 for the Nintendo Wii and on November 25th, 2010 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 .

NBA Jam iPhone

On February 10, 2011, EA Sports released the first version for the iPhone and iPad . The game is controlled by touchscreen . In the classic campaign you play a 36-game season with a team in which the player plays against 29 NBA teams, against 6 legend teams (New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets and Magic / Bird) as well as the Stickman team of EA developers. In single game mode, one team can play a game against another team. Plus, by completing challenges, privileges and NBA legends can be unlocked.
