MDK was released for PC by Shiny Entertainment in 1997 and later ported to the PlayStation . It was praised by the press (e.g. PC Games: 94%, PC Action 92% fun) and was one of the most innovative titles in its genre. Still, it was economically unsuccessful.

The person controlled by the player is caretaker Kurt Hectic , who is responsible for the scientist Dr. Fluke Hawkins works, and is sent out by, to save the earth from an alien invasion.

To do this, he has to destroy several gigantic tanks, each of which forms an entire level. At the beginning of each level he has to master the approach to these tanks: In free fall it is important to avoid enemy projectiles and collect extras.

Kurt Hectic owns a special combat suit which, in addition to an integrated rapid-fire rifle, is equipped with a telescopic sight implemented in the helmet. The resulting sniper mode, through which the player is able to enlarge the game world like with a telescopic sight, was an innovation in computer game design. In addition, Kurt can briefly float in the suit by activating a kind of paraglider. In the levels with Kurt, there are always special types of ammunition that Kurt can use, or even gadgets with which he can distract the enemy or make himself invisible. One of these gadgets also allows the six-legged robot dog Max to fly an air strike on enemy targets. Max only hits the specified position and is unable to track moving enemies.

Just like its successor MDK2, MDK is characterized by very bizarre humor and gloomy, sometimes surrealistic levels.

MDK2

MDK2 appeared in 2000 and is the successor programmed by BioWare .

The game was released for PC and Dreamcast . There is also an extended version under the name MDK2: Armageddon for PlayStation 2 .

To play the PC version you need at least a processor with 200 MHz, 16 MB RAM, an OpenGL graphics card with 4 MB and 250 MB storage space on a hard drive. A processor with 300 MHz, 32 MB RAM and an OpenGL graphics card with 8 MB are recommended.

Story and gameplay

The story follows on from the end of the first part. Another giant extraterrestrial vehicle is located in the city of Edmonton and Kurt has to penetrate the tank again and turn off the pilot to bring the device to a stop.

In addition to the caretaker Kurt , you can also control the absent-minded Dr. Fluke Hawkins and the six-legged robot dog Max take over. The game offers 10 levels and 20 different opponents. The bosses in particular are extremely varied. The player takes turns taking control of the three characters, each with their different skills:

Kurt corresponds to the representation in the first part.

Max can use up to 4 weapons at the same time and use a special rocket backpack in some places. The sections with Max play the fastest.

Dr. Fluke Hawkins asserts itself primarily through the clever combination of the objects that he finds in the game in the fight against the aliens. For example, a toaster, bread and some radioactive liquid can be turned into an effective weapon. However, the doctor can mutate into a giant for a short time.
