A number of sub-streets run through Glen Cove. An electrified Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) also runs through the city, handling much of the commuter traffic from New York to the eastern suburbs on Long Island.
history
The area was settled by Indians several thousand years ago . When the first Europeans arrived, a subgroup of the Lenni Lenape lived here .
In 1668 John Carpenter bought about 8 km² of land from the Indians. In the same year he involved four other partners in the project to establish a new settlement here. The place got the name "Musketa", which in the local language of the indigenous people meant place of hurry .
In the 1830s, steamers began operating regular services on Long Island Sound. The residents of New York City, who came to the area more and more often, did not appreciate the name Musketa very much because of its phonetic similarity to " Mosquito ". Therefore, in 1834, the residents decided to rename the place Glen Cove , which was reminiscent of the name Glencoe in Scotland .
In the mid-19th century, Glen Cove became a popular destination for New Yorkers. In 1867 the place was connected to the railway network, which made the connection with the city even faster. The population of the place grew, because more and more people who worked in the city could live here all year round.
At the end of the 19th century, increasingly wealthy industrialists settled here, including Charles Pratt , J. P. Morgan and Winfield Woolworth , who built expensive mansions on the shore. In the 1920s, the area became part of Long Island's northern shore region called the Gold Coast . Part of J. P. Morgan's estate today is Morgan Park and Beach Municipal .
Most of the villas have changed hands since the mid-1920s. John T. Pratt's property became what is now the Glen Cove Mansion Hotel and Conference Center , and George DuPont Pratt's property was bought by the UN Embassy of the Soviet Union . Winfield Hall, the former home of F. W. Woolworth, is still privately owned; Herbert L. Pratt's mansion is now owned by the Webb Institute .
Like many other New York suburbs, Glen Gove grew very rapidly after World War II. Land that was previously used for agriculture was built on as an increasing number of families, especially from southern and eastern Europe, moved from Queens and Brooklyn to Glen Cove. At the end of the 20th century, mainly people immigrated from Latin America and Asia .
The Glen Cove Post Office was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and the courthouse was added in 1990.
