Augusta Read Thomas

Augusta Read Thomas (born April 24, 1964 in Glen Cove / New York ) is an American composer and music teacher .

Thomas studied at Northwestern University , Yale University and the Royal Academy of Music in London. From 1993 to 2001 she taught at the Eastman School of Music , after which she held the Wyatt Professorship in Music at Northwestern University until 2006. She also gave several summer courses at the Tanglewood Music Center. From 1997 to 2006 she was composer in residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra . In 2009 she was director of the Festival of Contemporary Music in Tanglewood. In the same year she was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters , and in 2012 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Thomas composed orchestral and chamber music, choral works and several ballets. She received u. a. Prizes and awards from the Siemens Foundation in Munich, the ASCAP , the National Endowment for the Arts , the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation , the Koussevitzky Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts . In 2007 she was one of the two finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Music with the composition Astral Canticle .
