Chaya Czernowin

Chaya Czernowin (born December 7, 1957 in Haifa ) is an Israeli composer . Since she was 25, she has lived alternately in Germany, Japan and the USA.

Life

Chaya Czernowin received her artistic training at the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv and in Berlin with Dieter Schnebel and at the University of California with Brian Ferneyhough . After working scholarships in Tokyo and at IRCAM Paris, she taught a. a. 1993/1994 at the Yoshiro Irino Institute, Tokyo, and from 1990 to 1998 at the Darmstadt Summer Courses . Between 1997 and 2006 she was Professor of Composition at the University of California, San Diego. Since 2003 she has been the director of the “International Summer Academy for Young Composers” at Solitude Palace near Stuttgart. In 2004 she was invited by the European Center for the Arts in Hellerau (director Udo Zimmermann ) as the first “composer-in-residence”. From 2006 to 2009 she was Professor of Composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna , after which she became Professor of Composition at Harvard University in Boston.

Her works have been performed at over 25 festivals around the world, including a. the Salzburg Festival .

In 2017 she was accepted as a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts .
