Philippe Hurel (born July 24, 1955 in Domfront ) is a contemporary French composer. He is known as the composer of orchestral and chamber music works that are performed worldwide. His works are placed in the context of spectralism or spectral music.

Hurel studied musicology at the University of Toulouse from 1974 to 1979 . From 1980 to 1983 he studied composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Betsy Jolas and Ivo Malec . From 1986 to 1988 Hurel had received a scholarship to study at the Villa Medici in Rome. In 1995 he received the advancement award of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Munich for his Six Miniatures en trompe l'œil , in 2002 the Prix ​​de Compositeurs from SACEM and in 2003 the Prix ​​de la Meilleure Création de l'Année from SACEM. Philippe Hurel's works are now performed worldwide.

Hurel works in other fields too. In 1985 and 1986 as well as in 1988 and 1989 he worked as a musicologist at IRCAM in Paris. In 1990 he founded the ensemble for contemporary music Court-Circuit , of which he is still director today. From 2000 to 2002 he was composer-in-residence for both the Arsenal concert hall in Metz and the Orchester National de Lorraine .
