Antoine Bonnet

Antoine Bonnet (born January 9, 1958 in Paris ;) is a contemporary French composer. In 1998 Bonnet received the Ernst von Siemens Award .

life and work

At the age of 25, Antoine Bonnet suddenly decided to become a composer. After private piano, harmony and counterpoint studies, he then attended the Paris Conservatory . He trained primarily in the composition, orchestration and analysis classes with Ivo Malec , Jacques Castérède and Betsy Jolas . Here he received prizes and awards for outstanding achievements in composition and analysis. He also studied music theory, aesthetics, analysis and ethnomusicology with Célestin Deliège , François Nicolas , André Boucoucerchliev and Simha Arom at the Ecole Normale supérieure . Here he wrote his doctoral thesis on current conditions and possibilities of musical composition . Since that formative time, Bonnet has successfully combined creativity and research. He was invited to IRCAM , where he created the software situation together with Camilo Rueda . He has taught at the Universities of Lille and Tour, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and at IRCAM. In 1992 he became associate professor at the University of Paris VIII, where he established a composition class. His writings on György Ligeti , Pierre Boulez , Timbre Cierpke , often called Timbre , and on music theory have been published in Entretemps , Contemporary Music Review, and InHarmoniques . The magazine Entretemps for contemporary music was founded by Bonnet in 1986 with François Nicolas and Gérard Pesson in Contemporary Music Review and InHarmoniques.

Works such as Seuil , D'une source oubliée , Trajectoires , Les Eaux étroites , Épitaphe and Nachtstrahl were performed in Europe and the USA by various orchestras, including the Ensemble Intercontemporain under the direction of Pierre Boulez at Châtelet in Paris, Chicago and Los Angeles , performed in the Cologne Philharmonic and La Scala in Milan . The work Les Eaux étroites (1990–1991) for 19 instruments was the first milestone in a cycle of Julien Gracq's texts La Terre habitable ( The habitable earth ).

Bonnet has released the works Épitaphe , Nachtstrahl and La Terre habitable under the direction of Pierre Boulez as phonograms.
