Betsy Jolas (born August 5, 1926 in Paris ) is a French composer.

The daughter of the translator Maria Jolas and the writer and journalist Eugene Jolas went to the USA in 1940, where she studied composition with Paul Boepple , piano with Helen Schnabel and organ with Carl Weinrich . In 1946 she returned to France and completed her training at the Paris Conservatory with Darius Milhaud , Simone Plé-Caussade and Olivier Messiaen .

Jolas received numerous international awards and in 1983 became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 1985 she was elected Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres , and in 1992 she was elected Personnalité de l'année in France. In 1995 she became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1997 Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur .

After Jolas had represented Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory from 1971 to 1974 , she became professor of music analysis there in 1975 and of composition in 1978. In addition, she taught a. a. in Tanglewood , Yale University , Harvard University and Mills College .
