from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ensemble Avantgarde is an association of Leipzig musicians dedicated to the performance of the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Since it was founded in 1989, the ensemble has been working under the artistic and organizational direction of the Leipzig pianist and composer Steffen Schleiermacher in a changing line-up.

The members of the Ensemble Avantgarde are predominantly musicians from the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the MDR Symphony Orchestra , until 2006 the Leipzig String Quartet was also part of the ensemble. Guest conductors have been u. a. Hans Zender , Mark Forster , Friedrich Goldmann , Johannes Kalitzke , Roland Kluttig and Hsiao-LinLiao .

The program of the Ensemble Avantgarde focuses less on first performances than on the maintenance of the so-called modern classics and the performance of works by forgotten composers or compositions from special musical traditions. The focus is on the music of the 1920s and 1930s from Germany, the Soviet Union, American or Japanese music of the 20th century.

The Ensemble Avantgarde has been organizing the musica nova concert series at the Leipzig Gewandhaus since it was founded . Concert tours led to many European countries as well as Asia and South America. Numerous radio and CD productions document the work of the Ensemble Avantgarde.
