Mauricio Sotelo
Mauricio Sotelo (born October 2, 1961 in Madrid ) is a Spanish composer and conductor .
Sotelo began to play the guitar autodidactically as a child. He later took violin, piano and music theory lessons at the Madrid Conservatory . From 1980 to 1987 he studied composition as well as electroacoustic music and orchestral conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna . His musical works have been performed since the late 1980s, including operas as well as orchestral and chamber music. Sotelo's compositions often refer to literary works, including Federico García Lorca and Giordano Bruno .
Sotelo has been Professor of Composition (major) at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona (ESMUC) since 2010.
Sotelo received various sponsorship awards, including a. the promotion award of the City of Vienna (1991), the opera award of the Körber Foundation Hamburg (1996), the composition award “Reina Sofia” (2000) and the Spanish national award for music “Premio Nacional de Música” (2001). From 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 he was composer in residence and a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin .
