Beat Furrer
Beat Furrer (born December 6, 1954 in Schaffhausen ) is an Austrian composer and conductor of Swiss origin.
Life
Beat Furrer was born in Schaffhausen in 1954. In 1975 he moved to Vienna and studied composition with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati and conducting with Otmar Suitner . In 1984 he won the composition competition “Young Generation in Europe”. In 1985 Furrer founded the Klangforum Wien together with Viktor Liberda , of which he was artistic director until 1992 and to which he is still associated as a guest conductor. Since 1991 he has been professor for composition at the University of Art in Graz . In the mid-90s he founded the international ensemble and composers academy impuls together with the violinist Ernst Kovacic . In 1996 he was composer in residence at the Lucerne Festival . Furrer has been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts since 2005 . In 2006 he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale . From the 2006/07 winter semester to 2009 he was a visiting professor for composition at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . Furrer is a member of the Board of Trustees appointed by the German Federal Cultural Foundation for the New Music Network .
