Henri Dutilleux (born January 22, 1916 in Angers , † May 22, 2013 in Paris ) was a French composer .

life and work

After studying music at the Paris Conservatory from 1933 to 1938, he first worked for radio, taught at the École Normale de Musique from 1961 and from 1970 at the Paris Conservatory.

His music ties in with the tradition of Maurice Ravel , Claude Debussy and Albert Roussel . He became known in 1959 with his 2nd symphony Le Double . His orchestral piece Métaboles , premiered in 1964, was seen as a contribution to the musical avant-garde in the sense of expanding current forms of expression. He was considered a innovator of the lyrical form, and his compositions are inspired by all contemporary art forms.

At the invitation of Walter Fink , he was the 16th composer in the 2006 annual composer portrait of the Rheingau Music Festival .

Henri Dutilleux was married to the pianist Geneviève Joy (1919–2009) since 1946 .
