Maurizio Pollini (born January 5, 1942 in Milan ) is an Italian pianist and conductor .

Life

Pollini is the son of the Italian architect Gino Pollini . At the age of nine, Maurizio Pollini made his debut as a pianist. He studied first with Carlo Lonati until he was 13, then with Carlo Vidusso until he was 18. He received a diploma from the Conservatorio di musica “Giuseppe Verdi” di Milano . Later he was also trained by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli .

At the International Pianist Competition in Geneva in 1957, in which no first prize was awarded, Pollini won second prize. In 1959 he won the Ettore Pozzoli Competition in Seregno and the Chopin Competition in Warsaw the following year . Since then he has appeared in concerts internationally.

At times Pollini also worked as a conductor, namely at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro . Maurizio Pollini is the father of the pianist Daniele Pollini, who was born in Bern in 1978 .

repertoire

Pierre Boulez and Maurizio Pollini

Pollini first attracted attention through dynamic, fiery performances of works by Chopin . In 1957 he played the Chopin Etudes in Milan and caused quite a stir. At the end of the 1960s he focused more on clarity and tonal fine-tuning. Although it was often classified by technical critics as unrivaled worldwide, some of his interpretations were considered too smooth and lacking in tension at the time. Later interpretations again showed a higher degree of impulsiveness and expressiveness.

Pollini's repertoire focuses on works by Chopin, Beethoven and Schubert . In his hands, as Joachim Kaiser writes, Chopin always sounds festive and striving forwards, as he never rested on the often savored Rubato passages . Pollini also campaigned for the music of the 20th century , this applies to Berg , Webern and Schönberg as well as his contemporaries Boulez , Berio and Nono . On the occasion of Schönberg's 100th birthday, Pollini performed his complete works for piano in several cities.

Recordings

Pollini's recording of Chopin's etudes from 1972 is often regarded as a reference . His recording of Sonata No. 7 by Prokofiev , which he gives an unsentimental expression through structural clarity and rhythmic precision, is also considered to be decisive. His recordings of Beethoven's late piano sonatas (No. 28 to No. 32) from 1976/1977 have achieved the status of a reference recording . The recordings of the three late piano sonatas by Franz Schubert (D 958, D 959, D 960), which were awarded the Ernst von Siemens Prize, have also been highly praised. After all, the 2009 recording of the Preludes and Fugues of J. S. Bach'sWell-Tempered Clavier ” (Volume 1) is already counted among the outstanding Bach recordings.

Trivia

Pollini is one of the very few concert pianists who, despite the almost omnipresent availability of large Steinway stage pianos, only ever give concerts on their own instrument, as was also known from Krystian Zimerman and from Vladimir Horowitz and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. He travels with a "Fabbrini" - one of the Steinway grand pianos worked on by the Italian piano maker Angelo Fabbrini, which "sound almost like the instruments of the 19th century: more precise in the registers than an ordinary Steinway" and "diversified in the dynamic possibilities" .
