List of Austrian composers of classical music
This list contains known composers from Austria .
From a historical point of view, it is only partially correct to list only those German composers whose origin is the territory of today's Republic of Austria. One could also differentiate between German-speaking and foreign-language composers of classical music, if one were to use the state name Austria alone, without questioning the nationality of the composer.
In the historical context, today's Republic of Austria was only a small part of the Habsburg Empire Austria or Austria-Hungary, even if the Germans of the Habsburg monarchy, the German-Austrians, were the dominant population of the multi-ethnic state. With Austrians only the Germans were meant, i.e. the residents of German as their mother tongue. In this sense, only the German composers in Austria are listed here, who are also included in the list of German composers of classical music .
