Peter Barcaba (born October 3, 1947 in Vienna ; † September 19, 2017 ) was an Austrian composer and pianist .

Life

Peter Barcaba received his pianistic training from Doris Leischner and Bruno Seidlhofer in Vienna, Ludwik Stefanski in Warsaw and Conrad Hanssen in Detmold . He also studied composition with Alfred Uhl and conducting with Hans Swarowsky . As a pianist, in addition to solo concerts, he mainly performed as a chamber musician and accompanist, including as a long-time member of the Vienna Chamber Music Association, with which he played concerts all over Europe. He has also conducted several chamber orchestras , including the Ensemble Wienklang, the Krems Chamber Orchestra and the Sonyc Orchestra New York .

As a composer, Barcaba devoted himself to all genres: he wrote solo works for piano and viola, many chamber music works, song cycles, religious works for choir, solos and orchestra and solo concerts. Many of his works were premiered in the “New Artists Forum” in Vienna and at international festivals as commissioned works (Schleswig-Holstein, Aurich , Ottawa , New York, Seoul, ...).

Peter Barcaba held a piano professorship at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna until 2013, where he also sponsored many young chamber music ensembles. He also advocated the interpretation according to Heinrich Schenker .
