Eusebius Mandyczewski
Eusebius Mandyczewski ( Romanian Eusebie Mandicevschi ; born August 18, 1857 in Czernowitz , † July 13, 1929 in Vienna ) was an Austrian musicologist and composer of Romanian origin.
Life
Eusebius Mandyczewski, descendant of an old Greek Orthodox priestly family , began to compose during his time at the Imperial and Royal High School in Chernivtsi. He studied music theory with Martin Gustav Nottebohm and musicology with Eduard Hanslick . In 1879 he met Johannes Brahms , with whom he was a close friend until his death. From 1896 he taught music history , later also instrument studies , harmony , counterpoint and composition at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde . In 1887 he became head of the Vienna Singing Academy and archivist of the Society of Friends of Music . In the same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig. He was one of the most important initiators of the complete editions of the works of Franz Schubert , Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms. In 1901 Eusebius Mandyczewski married Albine von Vest, vocal teacher and director of the women's choir of the Vienna Society of Friends of Music.
His grave of honor is located in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 0, Row 1, Number 99).
Works
He composed orthodox masses , piano pieces, song cycles , male choirs and variations on themes by Handel for piano.
