Martha Handlos

Martha Handlos (born October 23, 1953 in Graz ; † February 7, 2017 in Vienna ) was an Austrian musicologist and music journalist.

Life

After studying musicology, Martha Handlos received her doctorate in 1985 with her “Studies on Viennese musical life in the Vormärz” at the Institute for Musicology at the University of Vienna . She has taught there since 1982 and was most recently assistant professor of historical musicology .

Handlos worked in the journalistic field for many years. From 1978 to 1982 she was the overall editor of the programs at the Salzburg Festival , from 1976 to 1991 she worked for the program editor at the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper and wrote numerous opera introductions for ORF . Her publications and lectures focused on the history of music in the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of music in Vienna and music theater . She also devoted herself to gender studies and the music of France.
