Augustine Franz Kropfreiter

Augustinus Franz Kropfreiter (born September 9, 1936 in Hargelsberg , † September 26, 2003 in Sankt Florian ) was an Austrian Augustinian canon , composer and organist .

Life

Augustinus Franz Kropfreiter was born in Hargelsberg near Enns in 1936 . He spent his school days in the Episcopal Gymnasium Petrinum . In the boys' college at that time he was raised strictly Catholic and received, among other things, his first basic musical training. Immediately after graduation he joined in 1953 in the Augustinian Monastery of St. Florian , where he initially by Johann Krichbaum in music theory was taught. From 1955 to 1960 he studied composition and organ at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and at the Vienna University of Music . After completing his studies, he worked as an organist in St. Florian . He was also a teacher of the St. Florian Boys' Choir and from 1966 head of the monastery choir ( Regens Chori ). In 2003 he died in St. Florian at the age of 68.

Kropfreiter created an extensive organ work and is one of the most important Austrian organ composers of the 20th century. He helped the St. Florian Monastery to become even better known. Among other things, he composed several orchestral works (including organ concerts , 3 symphonies ), masses , church music , choral music , chamber music and organ music (including Toccata francese , Signum , numerous chorale arrangements of various degrees of difficulty), with which he became famous not only in Austria . In his compositions he placed great emphasis on polytonality and Hindemith's counterpoint .
