Alessandro Poglietti (* first half of the 17th century, † July 1683 before Vienna ) was an organist and composer of the Baroque , whose origin could not be clarified yet last valid.

Life

From January 1661 at the latest, he worked as an organist , initially with the Jesuits , from the middle of the year until his death as a chamber and court organist at the Imperial Court under Leopold I. There is no evidence for the assumption that Poglietti came from Tuscany . Despite his Italian name, some indications point to a place of birth in Moravia , as Johann Gottfried Walther wrote in his " Musical Lexicon " in 1732 : " He is said to have been a German ". At the court, as well as in the wider area (in Kremsier and Kremsmünster ), he seems to have enjoyed quite a reputation, especially due to his onomatopoeic settings.

While fleeing the city besieged by the Turks , Poglietti was slain by enemy hands in July 1683 and his family was taken prisoner.

Works

He composed mainly for keyboard instruments , but some ensemble and choral works as well as the theoretical work “Compendium” have been preserved. Particularly noteworthy are Rossignolo , a broad suite including Toccata , Ricercar , Variations and Capriccios (including the one about the "Hennergeschrey"), as well as his collection of twelve strictly contrapuntal Ricercari. Outstanding examples of his onomatopoeic compositions for harpsichord are the Toccatina sopra la Rebellione di Ungheria (1671), the Toccata fatta sopra Cassed di Filipsburgo (1676) and the Capricietto sopra il cucu "Il Rossignolo" (1677).

After his death, his contrapuntal works in particular were received more widely.
