Josef Strauss

Josef Strauss (born August 20, 1827 in Mariahilf in Vienna , † July 22, 1870 in Vienna) was an Austrian engineer , inventor , composer and conductor .

Although the name Strauss is often found with ß in reference works , Strauss himself wrote his name with ss .

Life

Josef Strauss was a son of Johann Strauss (father) and his wife Anna and the brother of the famous “Waltz King” Johann Strauss (son) who was two years younger than him . The third and youngest of the Strauss sons was Eduard . Like their father, all of the Strauss sons were outstanding composers, whose works are still regular today. a. be performed in the New Year's concerts of the Vienna Philharmonic .

Grave of Josef Strauss

Josef Strauss did not strive for a musical career, but completed a degree at the Vienna Polytechnic (now the Technical University of Vienna ), worked as a construction manager for the construction of a weir in Trumau , Lower Austria , and designed two street sweepers. However, when Johann Strauss (son) returned from a concert tour in the late autumn of 1852, completely exhausted, Josef had to step in as Kapellmeister of the Strauss Chapel the following year. At that time he composed his first work, the waltz The First and the Last (in the mistaken opinion that this was his first and at the same time last work). The next series of waltzes, Op. 12, he consequently named The First after the Last ; he finally composed over 300 works. In the following years he increasingly represented his brother Johann as Kapellmeister. He took composition lessons and learned to play the violin . On June 8, 1857, Josef Strauss married Caroline Pruckmayer in the Johann Nepomuk Church on Praterstrasse . A daughter, Karoline Anna, was born on March 27, 1858.

The often ailing Josef Strauss suffered a collapse on her deathbed on February 22, 1870 when his mother died and had to be represented the following day at the annual student ball in the redoute halls of the Hofburg . Four months later he fell unconscious from the conductor's podium while on a concert tour in Warsaw . He died a short time later in Vienna. The cause of death remained unclear as his widow did not consent to an autopsy.

He was buried in his mother's grave in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof . On October 12, 1909, the remains of both of them were buried in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 32 A, number 44).

Works

Josef Strauss composed waltzes, including The First and Last (Op. 1), Spherical Sounds (Op. 235), Delirium Waltz (Op. 212), My Curriculum Vitae is Love and Lust (Op. 263) and Village Swallows from Austria (Op. 164) , Polkas such as Feuerfest (Op. 269), the Moulinet Polka (first performed on July 25, 1858 in Unger's Casino ) or the Pizzicato Polka (together with Brother Johann), quadrilles and other dance music. The operetta Frühlingsluft (text by Karl Lindau and Julius Wilhelm ), composed with his music around 30 years after his death , was premiered in 1903. Compared to the works of his brothers, his compositions are of a somewhat melancholy character.
