Albin Fries

Albin Fries (born June 18, 1955 in Steyr , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian pianist and composer .

Life

Fries studied music education and the concert skilled piano with Alexander Jenner at the Vienna Academy of Music , he also completed a master class with Jorge Bolet. In 1977 he won the Austrian Youth Composition Competition and in 1981 he received the talent award for music of the country Upper Austria .

In 1982 Fries took composition lessons from Leonard Bernstein . In New York City he studied with Sascha Gorodnitzki . After returning to Vienna he became a répétiteur and director of studies at the Vienna State Opera , as well as a teacher at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. After a creative break of more than 20 years, he started composing again in 2005. Several song cycles, tonal chamber music and piano works were published in quick succession, shaped by the musical language of the late Romantic period. In 2010/11 the three-act opera Nora was created based on a libretto by Miriam Mollard, and in 2012 the concert opera Tizian based on Hugo von Hofmannsthal .

His songs have been sung by a number of well-known artists, such as Elisabeth Kulman, Angelika Kirchschlager, Ildiko Raimondi, Camilla Nylund and others.

Fries received a commission from the management of the Vienna State Opera to compose a romantic fairy tale opera Persinette for young audiences based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Rapunzel , which premiered with great success on December 21, 2019 in the Great House of the Vienna State Opera.

Fries is the father of two children and has been in a relationship with Russian singer Margarita Gritskova since 2018.
