Fritz von Wettstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Wettstein, Knight of Westersheim (b) (born June 24, 1895 in Prague , † February 12, 1945 in Trins , Tyrol ) was an Austro-German botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ F.Wettst. ".

Life

Fritz Wettstein was the son of the Austrian botanist Richard Wettstein ; his maternal grandfather was the botanist and plant sociologist Anton Kerner von Marilaun . His brother was the zoologist Otto Wettstein-Westersheimb .

From 1925 he was professor in Göttingen , from 1931 in Munich and from 1934 director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Berlin-Dahlem .

Wettstein stood up for the geneticist Hans Stubbe , who had been department head at the newly founded Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Breeding Research in Müncheberg since 1929 . In 1936, employees of the Müncheberg institute who had been inclined towards the National Socialists accused Stubbe of “political unreliability”, which is why he was initially on leave and then finally dismissed without notice together with his colleagues Hermann Kuckuck and Rudolf Schick. Fritz von Wettstein then employed him until 1943 as a research assistant at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Berlin-Dahlem. On the initiative of von Wettstein and Stubbe, the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Crop Plant Research was founded in Vienna-Tuttenhof in 1943, and Hans Stubbe was appointed to manage it.

He worked particularly on plasmatic inheritance in deciduous mosses and the fireweed. Sheila F. Weiss judged him: "Before the war began, researchers like ... FvW ... represented Nazi racial policy at specialist conferences abroad and thus demonstrated their political usefulness for the Reich." ("Results" No. 22 , P. 4 and passim, engl., See web links)

Honors

In 1928 he was elected a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences , 1933 a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , 1935 a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and 1936 a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
