Gerhart Banco

Gerhart Banco (born April 26, 1926 in Vienna ) is Austrian brass music - composer , music teacher and church musician .

Life

From 1947 to 1971 Banco was a compulsory school teacher, from 1960 to 1989 music school director in Pöchlarn .

After studying the piano on his own, he received lessons from a private teacher. He learned the flugelhorn , helicon , tenor horn and clarinet in self- lessons in Hirschbach im Mühlkreis . He later worked as a horn player and oboist in the string orchestra in Waidhofen an der Thaya . The only instrument he learned was the violin from a music school teacher. In 1949 he founded a music band in Buchbach , where he also directed the one-class school and took over the organist's service. He played 1st flugelhorn in the Waidhofen Wind Orchestra, trumpet in the Waidhofen dance band and 2nd violin in a string quartet. From 1949 to 1951 he attended organist courses at the church conservatory in St. Pölten (final examination with distinction).

In 1956 Banco moved to Pöchlarn, taught at the secondary school and became a choirmaster and organist there. He was also employed in the music school, which he directed from 1960. In 1957 he founded the Pöchlarn town band. He undertook private studies with Erwin Miggl and Ernst Tittel in counterpoint and composition in Vienna. For a few years he led a small chamber orchestra in Melk and worked in the district teachers' orchestra of the Melk – Scheibbs districts, mostly as a horn player or violist. After the conductor's death, he took over the management from 1980 to 1993.

In 1971 Banco gave up teaching and took over full-time management of the Pöchlarn Music School. He taught piano, violin and all kinds of wind instruments. In May 1977 he was awarded the Austrian title of Professor , and he was the winner of a composition competition of the ORF -Landesstudio Niederösterreich in 1980. He composes church works, concert and symphonic wind music, chamber music for wind instruments, school works and sacred wind music.

At an ORF competition, Banco received the fanfare for the n.ö. Theatersommer Op. 126 No. 2 first prize. With the Ostarrachi Fanfare Opus 212 he won first prize in the Lower Austrian Brass Band Association. He was also awarded 1st prize at a hunting horn music competition in 2004 (No. 1 from Opus 280).

On major birthdays, for the first time on the 60th, there were composition concerts with exclusively their own works, played by the Pöchlarn town band or by a district orchestra. Several times Banco was also heard as a soloist on a wide variety of instruments. At the age of 70 he took the musician badge on three instruments, and on his 85th birthday he was a soloist on trumpet, bassoon and saxophone. A birthday concert for his 90th birthday with his compositions took place on April 24, 2016. As part of this concert, he received the municipality's great honor, honorary citizenship. He was also presented with the citizenship certificate of the twin town Riedlingen and the highest award of the Lower Austrian Brass Music Association , the Josef Leeb Medal.
