Georg Christoph Wagenseil
Georg Christoph Anton Wagenseil (born January 29, 1715 in Vienna , † March 1, 1777 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer .
Life
He was born in Vienna as the son of an Augsburg merchant family and trained by the court conductor Johann Joseph Fux . Wagenseil composed for the imperial court from 1739 until his death . He was also employed as an organist and harpsichord player for a while. His students included Josef Anton Steffan and Johann Baptist Schenk . He also taught Marie Antoinette to play the piano; Famous is an episode in which the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart plays one of Wagenseils pieces at the imperial court and asks him to turn the pages.
Wagenseil is largely forgotten today, but was a well-known musician of his day - which meant a lot in the times of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , who knew his works. He composed operas , chorales , symphonies , concerts , piano and chamber music . As a composer he belonged to the early Viennese school together with Matthias Georg Monn and Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf . In his over a hundred symphonies he shows himself to be related to the early Haydn and attached to the Mannheim school . In 1777 he died of lung addiction .
He is only distantly related to Johann Christoph Wagenseil and Christian Jacob Wagenseil .
In 1912 Wagenseilgasse in Vienna- Meidling was named after the composer.
